What are my chances of finding wifi access in asia?
13 years ago, June 25th 2010 No: 1 Msg: #114049
I have recently indulged myself with a shiny new netbook which I will take on my upcoming trip to Asia. I will be visiting India, Nepal, Thailand, Philippines and Indonesia. I know these are huge slabs of the world but I was wondering how often I'll find wifi access in those places in guest houses restaurants etc?

If a country or place does not have access can I use my netbook in internet cafes to upload my already written blogs and photos? Or would I have to save it on a memory stick then use the pc's provided?

Am desperately hoping I can limit my time in net cafes as they always frustrate the living hell out of me!

Hi Scott

We didn't have a netbook 😞 but there is wifi in loads of places in Asia so you won't have a problem.

Even if you find that your guesthouse doesn't have it then often coffee houses and restaurants will have it, and if all else fails head to MccD's where you can get free refills on coffee and use their wifi for as long as you want!!

If you can't find wifi then some places might let you use their connection but most would probably want you to use their PC's and use a memory stick so probably best to take one too.

Best bet to take a laptop.. we definatley will next time as trying to write a blog while a million kids play war games whilst screaming shouting and constantly looking over your shoulder and asking what you are doing is a NIGHTMARE!!

Hi Scott,

Congrats on the new purchase - after the trip you'll probably wonder how you ever did without it 😊

Of the places you mentioned, I've only been to Thailand, but every place I stayed there had wireless. Reply to this

No problem finding internet shops in Thailand and the Philippines. Some hotels may have wifi and some do not. But there is always a cheap internet shop within a short walk. Besides the coffee houses and restaurants some bars have free wifi for their customers.

I have a netbook now for travel but I sometimes prefer to use my old flash drive with Firefox on it in an internet shop where I have a standard sized keyboard. I find the netbook okay for emails and writing that is not lengthy but the keyboard and my big hands don't work that well together. Too often I hit two keys at a time with the smaller sized keyboard.

You can have a flash drive loaded with Firefox, Notepad, ClamWin Opera and some other programs on it. Using that FD in an internet shop computer the Firefox home page matches Firefox on my home computer. Same design, same favorites or bookmarks and same toolbar choices. (You should set this up ahead of time at home before your trip then it is already to use anywhere you can get a computer.)

When you take your netbook on the road, even a flash drive, make sure you password protect it in case someone else ends up with your property. Most of the security boxes I have come across in hotels have not been large enough for laptops but a few would take a netbook. If you intend to stay in cheap hostels you have to be very careful of someone stealing your computer. I mean a fellow tourist not necessarily the hotel staff! Have a couple good antivirus programs on your netbook to check for bugs and other pests and check often!

Good luck.

Thanks guys for your responses.

It seems then that in S.E.A I can banish my time in netcafes which, for me, will remove the only negative of travel. No answers re. India or Nepal though. I was hoping that as India has so wholeheartedly embraced the silocon chip that, it too, would now offer wi-fi connectivity on a wide scale but, from some basic research, this seems not to be the case. Can anyone make me happy by telling me otherwise?

Not necessarily because it will depend on your hotel having free wifi. Some hotels have wifi that, like internet shops, you also pay for the time. If you go to a coffee house or even a bar you pay by the drink you purchase. Some hotels charge more than internet shops.

Fortunately if you look around you can find an internet shop in Thailand and the Philippines where the price you pay will be around a US dollar per hour, or less. (The fancier and yuppier looking the place the more you pay for your time!) In these shops you can use your little netbook or their computer. Look for an internet place that has newer computers and check that they have working antivirus programs.
