Beaches/Islands in July

Where to go?

Hey All,

I'm hoping someone's got some recommendations for me for my upcoming trip to Thailand...

I'm flying into Bangkok with my family (Wife and two very young children) in the beginning of July where we'll hang around for a bit, to see how the kids adjust to the heat/humidity/food etc... After that I want to travel south to pretty much just play with them on the beach for the rest of the month. I know July isn't in the ideal season but we can cope with a bit of rain so not too worried about that, also due to having two children with me partying hard isn't really what I'm loking for. The options I'm considering are...

Gulf side
Koh Tao - Been here loads of times so would preferably rather go somewhere else Koh Phangan - Probably Bottle beach - Better weather but more expensive (because it's not low season).

Andaman Side
Krabi - Never been here before so don't know what it's like... Koh Lanta - Anyone been on low season? What's it like? Koh Lipe - This'll take a bit more getting to, Is it worth it...? also again, anyone been in low season?

Also if there are any recommendations of good value places to stay that would be great... I know it's getting increasingly hard in Thailand to find any kind of paradise, good value or otherwise!

Cheers,

Mike. Reply to this

Hi Mike,

Easy, Phuket/Krabi will be way more rainy than the other side. So you have indeed Koh Tao, Samui, you may also consider Koh Chang and the Islands around...easy to get there from Bangkok. July is the low seasons, with the events, you should have no problems to have a good deal once you get there. So I would keep on the Gulf side, and just be ready to move if the rain hit too hard...had nice rain tonight in Bangkok.

Hope this help,

Did you think of the Perenhtians? We went there in July, not that much rain and a very nice diving place. Reply to this

Koh Chang and the Islands around

Hadn't really thought of these islands. Do you know what the weather will be like in July? Also, what's the snorkelling like?

I think the Perhentians may be a little far in the time frame we have, but it does raise the possibility of Langkawi.

a very nice diving place

Sadly, my youngest will be only 6months old and still firmly attached to Faye so even if childcare was possible we wouldn't be diving as I couldn't go without my 'buddy'. Shame as we miss diving so much!

Ah!! You haven't visited Krabi? Well, its time when you must. Krabi coastline is one of Southeast Asia’s most stunning and gorgeous secluded island beach destinations. Here you can enjoy rock climbing, kayaking and diving. Visit this place and you will not regret your decision.

Mike,

Langkawi is same side a Phuket, while Perenhtians is same side as Koh Samui. There is less rain on the Koh Samui/Koh Chang side. I was pretty well surprise by Koh Chang (and I'm not the easy type). The place is nice, and there is also good snorkeling. Diving is on the very average, but this will be for most of the region at that time, except south in the Perenthians.

Koh Chang is easy and cheap to go to, even with toddlers I think. And it should be cheaper than big Ko Samui.

Hope this help, we havea blog on Koh Chang, but we were there only 4 days in a resort...so beside diving, not much exploration.

How bad is the rain on the Andaman side?

I've read about it on the net and they claim that it's rare that it will be all day (only a few hours normally, and usually at night). I'm thinking of going to that side as I think it will be better value as we should be able to score some real bargains with the hotels.

I just looked at the climate stats for Koh Chang and July is the wettest month there, but that might still be 'drier' than the other islands I'm looking at in July.

Too many decisions... Maybe we'll just see what the weather is doing when we get there. 😊 Reply to this

You put it properly" than the other one...but rain levels change everyweek...you will have rain...a lot or a little...it's like playing a dice....but you can do the "safer bet" by going on the "drier" side...a lot of if....just be flexible. Reply to this

Koh Chang gets more rain in July than most of the other Thai islands put together. One to avoid.

I'l also be heading to the islands in July. We're starting on the Andaman side for a week or so. Yes there will be some rain, but I hear not enough to spoil your vacation. After this we plan to spend most our time on the gulf side - mainly Samui & Phangan. The weather should be better here, plus it's a little cheaper. We have a month so we'll just go where we fancy.

I've had many recommendations about the NE side of Koh Phangan. Reply to this

Thailand has lots of beautiful beach. There is always a variety on each island if you go looking for it, but below is a quickie summary:

Koh Samui - Large and very touristy (Lamai Beach, Lamai Beach, Chaweng Beach)
Koh Phangan - Haad Rin is beach party central! (Haad Rin)
Koh Tao - Cheapest scuba around and nice small island
Krabi/Railay - beautiful, rock climbing heaven, expensive (Railay Beach, Phi Phi Island, Ao Nang, Koh Lanta)
Koh Phi Phi - gorgeous, small, expensive, great diving
Koh Lanta - large, fairly quiet, Long beach is the best beach
Phuket - busy, loads of package tourists and vacationers (Patong Beach, Karon Beach, Kata Beach)
Koh Pu - very small and quiet, tree house bungalows
Koh Chang - Nice beaches, lots of tourists from Bangkok (White Sand Beach )

I agree with david. Do visit Krabi when you come here. It is one of the most exotic island beach destinations. Reply to this

Not really in July though - it rained for a week when we were in Krabi/Phi Phi. Reply to this

A week? That sucks! Really glad those trains were booked up now. Chang wasn't great but we did have a few days of glorious sunshine, and low season does mean you can score a real bargain on accomodation.

There is an upside though... All those clouds in the sky make for some incredible sunsets!!! 😊 Reply to this
