Most of Malaysia is pretty cheap really so don't worry too much. Like most people will tell you the world over eat the local food and travel by public transport to keep costs down. Both these are really easy throughout Malaysia.

The local food is absoloutely delicious.. our favourite was Roti canai which is a flaky pastry bread and you get a couple of curry sauces to dip in.. a filling and super cheap meal for both breakfast & lunch, this used to cost us around 1RM (often less) or 20p fruit is availble on every street corner and is also really cheap.

Buses are frequent and good value going the length of the country but the train is also a good bet. We caught the jungle train south to Taman Negara and sat in the cheapest seats which were comfortable for the 8 hour or so journey. This journey cost us RM30 altogether.

Obviously the more tourist areas tend to be more expensive but we found the Cameron Highlands particularly good value and even places like Langkawi won't break the budget if you shop around. In fact the only place we thought was quite expensive were the Perhenthian Islands but we went at peak season when it was packed out.... worth every penny though as it's beautiful there and comes highly recommended.

Below are some examples of accommodation rates we used to pay:
KL - 40RM for a double room shared bathroom
Cameron Highlands - 25RM twin room shared bathroom
Langkawi - 50RM double room with ensuite
Perhenthian Kecil - 60RM for a basic chalet with amazing sea view
Taman Negara - 40RM for a double room with en suite

Hope this helps a bit, you'll have a great time as it's a a beautiful country, we loved it.

2 weeks isn't a whole lot of time, so I would get a bus from Singapore to Melaka (Johor Bahru is just a business city and of no interest to tourists), then spend at least 5 days in Kuala Lumpur (and a couple of days to the Cameron Highlands if that interests you). Then up north to Ipoh and the Batu Caves, then Georgetown in Penang. And spend your last few days basking in the sun on Pulau Langkawi. You can get cheap airfares back to KL through Air Asia from Langkawi. Reply to this

Hi there,

Yep, the most economical way is via public transport especially via bus. From Singpore at Golden Mine Complex/Tower you can get bus to Melaka. It's a nice place to visit esp the 'spanish heritage' old building. From Melaka you can get a bus & stop at Kuala Lumpur to see Malaysian icon; Petronas Twin Towers & shop at Bukit Bintang area. From KL you can take bus at Puduraya Main Bus station & go north to Penang. If u have a bit more time then u must fly to Langkawi from Penang & enjoy the beatiful langkawi beach.

Enjoy ur trip

For night moves, try the trains and save one night accommodations think of them as moving cheap hotels for that night. Reply to this

Hello Denise and Marcel,

I suggest you visit Malacca. I've been there and it's about 2 hours away from Singapore. You'll definitely enjoy the scenery during the bus ride - very clean and green.

I hope you may be able to find a very nice and knowledgeable tour guide like I did.

Enjoy your trip!

From Singapore you can bus or take a train to KL and see some of the sites around there for a while. Many backpackers end up in Penang. Penang is a little cheaper than KL. The nearest city to Penang for a train station is Butterworth, only a short taxi or ferry ride away.

As far as food goes you can survive on fried rice if you want. Nasi Goreng is cheap to buy and filling!

Singapore will be the most expensive place, then KL and Penang a little cheaper. Smaller cities are very reasonable as far as expenses go.

Good luck. Reply to this

Hi, from SG to KL. You can take bus or train for sure its more cheaper, if you plan for shopping than for sure u need to go pavillion - KL (its expensive :p) ,One Utama - PJ (average price to lower price:D), Bukit Bintang walk or so call Golden triangle and etc. beside it still got a lot of place you can visit at PJ like batu cave, sunway lagoon (feel the beach in the town) and etc.

Wish u all the best and have a good travel in malaysia. Welcome to Malaysia :D Reply to this
