Overnight train to Surat Thani

Does anyone know if it is possible to book train tickets from outside the country? We want to take the overnight train from Bangkok to Surat Thani the night after we arrive in Bangkok (and Thailand) and i fear it´ll be sold out if we wait til then to try to book them.
