Is the Bangkok airport link up and running?
13 years ago, June 12th 2010 No: 1 Msg: #113036
Hello, planning just an overnight stay in Bangkok at the start of our trip and was looking at the Airport Link Guesthouse as a convenient place to stay - 25 minutes to the airport by the new Airport Link. I then read on wikipidia they expect the Airport Link system to be fully operational by August, 2010.
Does anyone know if it is running yet? This guesthouse says it´s 500m from the MAKASAAN PRATUNAM station.

No it is not running for real yet. They are still testing the tracks, etc. They have been giving some free rides out but I wouldn't expect it to be running for a few months. I hope I am wrong though!

Keep in mind that if the Airport Link has the same hours as the Skytrain it will not be in use after midnight. So, if your plane arrives late at night you may not be able to use it anyway.

From the airport to the city there is an Airport Express Bus available to just before midnight. There is a meter taxi (Public Taxi) service that is available 24 hours a day. Two people in a meter taxi is not much more than 2 people on the Airport Express bus and it is half the time and door to door. When you take a taxi in Bangkok the meter fare you pay is for everyone not per passenger.

There is a cheap 35 baht city bus that leaves from the airport bus terminal. You have to take the free shuttle to get to this bus station. Various buses to different places in Bangkok. From where the bus lets off you may have to take the Skytrain or a meter taxi to your hotel if it is not within walking distance. Note: After 7 or 8 PM they switch to smaller passenger vans which fill up and then depart depending on amount of passengers waiting. There is not much room on those vans for any larger pieces of luggage or backpacks.

During the day when you take the city bus into the city one route I use is to take bus 552 to the On Nut (or Oh Nut) Skytrain station and then proceed on using the Skytrain. A price of 35 baht is pretty good but the ride may take an hour or more in rush hour traffic.

Good luck.

Thanks for all the info, brilliant.

Our flight gets in on a Friday afternoon around 12:15 pm and we´re planning to stay around Hualamphong Sation. Any advice on the best/cheapest way to get there?

Cheapest way might be the 35 baht bus in the previous post. That is also maybe the longest ride. City bus to Oh Nut (also written as On Nut) then take Skytrain to Asok stop. Pick up the subway to the train station at that stop. Subway stops at train station, get off and hoof it to your hotel - somewhere??? Kind of dull at night around the train station area. Other areas in the city have more to do.

Keep in mind, like it says in first post, 2 or more people using the meter taxi is almost the same price as using the Airport Express Bus # AE4.

Airport Express Bus and Meter Taxi sign up desks are both on the first floor. Meter taxi sign up desks are in 2 places at the curb. If one place has a long line try the 2nd place. Look for a blue podium/desk with a picture of a taxi on it. Also with writing that says "Public Taxi." Taxi clerk will ask for your hotel name (have proper address not only hotel name, you can print up the website map.) Taxi desk clerk is supposed to check that the meter fare starts at 35 baht and the taxi looks safe. He or she will tell the driver where to go. You get a receipt that has the taxi ID on it and a place to call if you have problems. You pay 50 baht surcharge (only leaving airport not returning to airport) along with what the meter says at the hotel. During the ride you are responsible for any toll charges, perhaps 70 baht total, clearly marked at toll booths. Have small bills available to pay driver unless you don't want any change back from a 500 baht note. So you have to change money over at the airport and get smaller bills. If you forget to do this at the first toll use a larger note to pay the toll and then you have small bills.

When you take a meter taxi in Bangkok the price you pay is not per passenger! If you cram 4 people in the cab you still only pay the meter fare!

Try to schedule some time to see Bangkok before you fly home.

Good luck. Reply to this
