based on my experience having trip with my college. we start to climb from the bottom part of the mountain at around 9 am and we arrived at the top station around 6pm. this station provides accomaodation for us to stay before we climb to the top of the mountain which takes another 6-8 hours. Hi Tichuot,

What happened, did you climb it in 1 day or found a place to stay?

Kind regards,

Although i could not climd the top mountain Kinabalu 4095m but i climbed Rabah Rata ( 3272m). up and dow a day and met a lot of person to climed 2D1N.

I started at 8 A.M at Timopon and 11.35A.M stayed at Rabah Rata and the weather had a lot of fog so A Giude not to allowed i climb so i had to come back.

3 hour 35 minute for up and 1h35 for down ( i usually run when i go down).

Hi there

I have done Mt K twice, both with overnight stay. However, a friend of mine managed to reach to summit in midnoon. She started around 730am, and reach Laban Rata by noon, the last I know (from 2008), you can continue for your summit climb if you start from Laban Rata before 1pm. It should take about 2 hours, depending on your fitness. So there will be 4 hours return. Even though getting down seems a lot more easier, but it will take nearly the same time when you ascend.

Did you try another alternative, Mersilau trail instead of the usual one which is through Timpohan Gate?
You can find the fees by google search the web

http://www.suterasanctuarylodges.com.my/v2/a_cozy_hideaway.html, I booked my accommodation with them directly for my 2nd climb.

Hi

I climbed Mt K twice, both with overnight stay. A friend of mine who started at 730am, and reach Laban Rata by noon. When I went there in 2008, the guide told me we are allow to continue ascend to the summit, the cutoff time is 1pm if not mistaken. It will take about 2 hours to get to summit, and lesser back to Laban Rata. If you have good fitness I would say it is possible for 1 day climb, but this is all depends on if you are allow to do that or not.

What I know is there is a change management since don't know when (my friend is Sabahan) so you have to secure a place to stay.

If you cannot find any places to stay, do consider another trail, Mersilau trail. My friend who did it say is better as it is less crowded, but it is all depending on what time you start you trek.

I booked my accommodation directionly with Sutera Lodge.

How I miss Vietnam Coffee, I just couldn't make the same one as the one I drank there. I was in Hanoi in 2008. Reply to this

I want to climb in November of this year (2010.) I was wondering if it would be worth it to book through a full service tour company or to book through Sutera and find my own guide? I am leaning toward going straight through Sutera. Does anybody have advice on where to hire a guide? I want to hike up to Laban Rata, stay there, and then hike up the next morning as most people do. I want to book soon as there doesn't appear to be many openings left. Any advice and thoughts would be appreciated. 😊 Reply to this

Hi Andrew,

I booked through Sutera and it was good, I had my own guide and can recommend it. Not cheap though!

I went in December last year but I booked only a few days in advance so I would be surprised if things are fully booked already. But better safe than sorry! Good luck! Reply to this

Thanks for the quick response Teun. Yes I see the prices are not cheap. Luckily I have been saving up for a long time so it is in the budget. I'm really excited to do this! Do you have any recommendations on accommodations in Kota Kinabalu? Reply to this

Hmmm, I stayed quite far out of the city center (at the new city they're building up north) but that was a bit disappointing location wise... I recommend you stay downtown somewhere. There are plenty of hostels/hotels there, but I don't know any one of those... Reply to this

Hi AndrewE

You will be allocated a guide when you register yourself for the climb. All climbers are require to register at the office.

There is also a new activity (http://mount-kinabalu-borneo.com/blog/mount-kinabalu-via-ferrata-adventure-faq.html) up the mountain if you are keen, and they do have basic cabin as well, but if might need a good sleeping bag. The only heated building has very limited spaces, you can always try your luck on non heated one. I stayed in cabin for my first climb, and I have 2 sleeping bag (one provided in the cabin, and one that I brought along)

I came to know about "Ferrata" just before my climb hence I didn't get a chance to try it at all.

In KK, there are heaps of backpacker hostels to 5-star hotel, the backpacker I stayed is about 10 minutes walk from Hyatt, near the main street. It is quiet and clean, with air-condition. Will ask my friend if they remember the name.

Accommodation
There is only one building with hot water and is heated, and normally is booked out

If you don't mind cabin, book cabin and you can still hang around in the heated building. but do bring a good sleeping bag with you as the sleeping bag provided in the cabin is not that good.

Just for info if you're keen to do other things

they have their own cabin, can try your luck if you can't book through sutera

KK town
I stayed in a hostel that I forgotten the name which is clean, quiet and with air condition. About 10 minutes from Hyatt if you know where is that. I stayed another time in a hotel pretty close to Gaya Street, which is a terrible mistake unless they give you a room at higher level. As the music from the street and just below my room (a pub) is too loud for me.

Hi Andrew,

In KK, you can stay A & J hotel new Central Point. I stayed there 5 months ago with price: RM20/person ( Dorm).

When you resgister in HQ, they will supply the guide to you because if you dont have guide you can not receive permit to climb.

Good look. Reply to this

Thanks Lee San Cheong for the information. That is helpful to know I will want to bring my own sleeping bag. I am staying in a cabin, that is fine I do not need a heated room to sleep good. A good sleeping bag will be enough. I have booked through Sutera for RM860.

Of interest, in the e-mail it was mentioned:

"Due to an unexpected technical problem at Timpohon Gate Power Station, we are currently experiencing electricity failure at Laban Rata. All efforts are on the way to rectify this problem.

There will be no electricity supply until further notice. However, there are basic lightings which is powered by our mini gen set. Hot shower and room heater are not available during this period.

Any inconvenient caused is much regretted. "

This is unlike to affect me as I am not traveling there until November. Just thought I would share this information though.

Thanks tichuot for the Hostel recommendation, I see there are plenty of hostels in KK so I am sure I will have no problem. Also thanks for clarifying that they supply the guide. This was confusing to me at first. Reply to this

wow, the price has definately increase a lot in 2 years, my last climb was in 2008. Another useful info if you're not a frequent mountain climber, bring a deep heat with you. Btw, the night temp was 9-10C in Sept. As for me, I love to bring along some refreshing candies like menthol, fisherman with me. I hope you get a cabin close enough to Laban Rata to you, as there are few cabins scattered around the area, meaning you have either climb up/down your food 😊 Don't forget to bring a good windproof jacket, even my Scottish friends are shivering up the summit. It is also handy if you can bring those extra large disposable raincoat, in case you are get stuck in rain and you don't really want your bag and yourself to get wet. Reply to this
