Hi Jason,

There is a backpacker area in Ho Chi Minh City - the Pham Ngu Lao/Bui Vien area. There are literally hundreds of guesthouses and hotels there. It's full of bars and restaurants and travel agents where you can meet fellow travellers. I would suggest you find a place to stay there. If you are flying into HCMC from your home country, then book somewhere in advance. There are plenty on the internet. Have a look at travelfish.com for some ideas, or a guidebook. If you are travelling on a tight budget then there are dorm rooms for a couple of dollars, or rooms on the main busy streets for the same. They will be very loud though. There are also lots of quiet alleyways where you can get a room with en suite, cable, air con etc. for about $10-20 a night.

A month is a good length of time to explore the country. As Vietnam is long and thin, you will find that most other travellers are doing one of two routes, up or down. So, as you go up the country you will bump into the same people again and again.

Hope this helps. We live in HCMC so if you have any other questions, let us know.

Kate

Hey Jason!
Nice to know your plan to visit vietnam. I can give you some suggestion for your stay in HCM city and Hanoi. If you are in HCM city, Bui Vien and Pham Ngu Lao street are tourist places. You can easily find many hostel with budget price...You can book by your own.

In HCm, you can arrange some tours outside the city to know more the local life of Vietnamese people on Mekong river. One day My Tho or Floating market will give you some experiences. Price for group about 20usd!

In Hanoi, you can find Hanoi old quarter with many hotel and hostel in Ngo Huyen (packbacker hotel). Easy to have budget price.

Hi Jason,

When are you in Vietnam? I am heading there tomorrow so would be great to catch up if you are around. If not, I would be really grateful if you have any tips for me on where you met people easily. I am only around till 15th April.

Hi Kelly

You shouldn't have a problem meeting people in Vietnam, it's an easy place to meet other travellers because everyone is going in one of two directions: up or down.

We live here, so let us know if you have any queries!
