I'm in the beginning stages of planning a trip through Southeast Asia. I know I will be in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam for three months and then would like to travel up thru Vietnam, then down thru Laos into Thailand, thru Malaysia, onto Indonesia, ending up at West Timor where I will be staying for three months. I am becoming a bit overwhelmed with information. Would like to do most of the traveling by train and boat. Is this possible? and how much time should I allow to do this?? Is a month possible, if I just want to hit highlights of the area? I would greatly appreciate any advice that someone might have. Also would like to know of the must-sees! Reply to this

Hi

I think you are underestimating the size of the area you want to cover in a month. If you are going to see these countries in that time, you are going to be flying between cities, rather than going overland 'through' countries. To go up from HCMC to Hanoi would take you about three days if you did it without stopping anywhere in between. We usually advise people that South-North Vietnam or visa versa takes a minimum of 2 weeks and ideally 3. Tomorrow we are travelling back from Nha Trang to Saigon. If you look this up on a map it's a really really small distance, yet the roads are so bad here that it will take 10-12 hours.

.....I don't even know if you could do this whole route in a month if you didn't stop anywhere.

I would suggest that you either choose places you want to see in each country and look at flights between them, or concentrate on 1-3 of the countries above. There are lots of budget flight companies about - check out Air Asia and Jetstar for a start.

Must-sees....hum....there are so many. It'll be easier to give you this when you decide which countries you want to concentrate on....

Sorry this might not seem very helpful!!

Hello Tracy 😊

You could pick and choose what you want to do and see, then it would be possible to get from Vietnam to Timor in a month.

I am becoming a bit overwhelmed with information.

It always seems more complicated while planning it, than while doing it.

Would like to do most of the traveling by train and boat. Is this possible?

If you mean, is it possible to do it overland, then yes it is as far as I know.

A copy of South East Asia on a Shoestring by Lonely Planet might be a useful purchase for you. It has just about all the information an independent traveller would need for travel in SE Asia.

Thanks to all for the advice. I figured I was being overambitious. Reply to this
