Just a heads up - Our trip to Thailand was amazing. I would love to go back a travel it in more detail sometime soon. Our only downfall is one we've just discovered on arriving in Singapore..
We stayed at the Ma Ney resort, booked by a travel agent in Bangkok about 2 weeks before we were due to stay there. It seemed great, just what you need to basic backpacking on Phi Phi. We were perhaps a bit naive - there were no maids etc, and so we left our bags unlocked. I had a small amount of currency for each location in my backpack, inside a plastic wallet, inside another plastic wallet, folded up in a jumper at the bottom of my bag, and my two friends had done a similar thing with their money.
After leaving Phi Phi to get to Phuket for a flight to Singapore we all discovered that all our money was gone.
Don't get too comfortable! Keep your bags locked up no matter what!!
I've learnt the hard way. Reply to this

It could be another tourist that stole your money - even people you know or traveling with you!

Sometimes the "cheap comes expensive!" Move up to a more expensive place that has a safety box for your valuables and cash. This way a fellow tourist or even the hotel/hostel staff can't get to your stuff.

Always lock your bags! Reply to this

But don't get complacent about about security boxes at reception or locked bags! See my post at

But rest assured that most places are safe and secure so long as you don't leave things lying in full view. Reply to this

I'm sorry to hear what happened. I also had an experience like that, but that was a vacation in the african region. Just don't judge people really quickly. I wished you checked your belongings first before yo left the place. That's what I do to every time.
