Realisically can I really stay in veitnam for 7weeks with about £1000 cash??

Hi, I've booked a trip to vietnam for 7 weeks starting the 5th april 2010 n coming home at end of may.

I shud have around a £1000 saved for the trip and have already paid for myflight from england, my flight to hanoi from bangkok... I still need a visa.

I've read budget books and reseached loads but still a bit aprehensive about costs and affording it. I dont drink an awful lot and can go with out completely because i have a better time sober.

I've looked at budget hostels and don't mind roughing it.

I'm worried about the cost of train travel through vietnam (is it really as cheap as $40 from hanoi to HCMC???

Would love to hear from anyone who has done this successfully and at wot costs!?! thanks all

Hello Glen 😊

Yes, that is enough, for a backpacker trip. I think you could stay longer even with that much. I think you would need 10 to 15 pounds per day. Allow some for the visa and to extend the visa.

Maybe somebody who lives there or has been there recently will post some costs and prices here.

Thats about 32 USD per day, that was plenty when I was there less than a year ago. We got a ok double room for less than 10 usd even in Hanois old quarter. Food is cheap, drink is cheap, travel is cheap. At your budget you will do fine, even afford some fancy meals, "expensive" trips (halong bay or w/e) or other activities. Train travel was cheap and easy, cant remember how much we payed, but it wasn't much at all for hard sleepers which was the cheapest available when I booked same day as I wanted to travel on. Dunno what the price for Hanoi to HCMC is, $40 sounds reasonable, but maybe a bit more if you can't get the cheapest tickets. I wouldn't worry about it though. It wont be the expense that kills your budget 😊

Edit: As for the visa I wonder if it was possible to get a 2 month one in advance, so I would try that if I was going for 7 weeks. Less hassle when you are there is always good.

Hi Glenn

Is it just you travelling?

You can get a dorm bed in the cities for about $7 a night. You can get a cheap double room for $10 in most places. In the big cities that room may be abit old and stinky though! To rent rooms to tourists in VN, they must provide air con, a tv and a bathroom (or something like that) so you don't get the dirt cheap, mattress on the floor places that you can in Thailand.

An open tour bus ticket from Hanoi to HCMC, stopping at various places along the way is looking at about $25, depending on where you want to stop. A beer in a cheap bar is around $1. A nice meal in an cheap restaurant is about $3. For street food you are looking at about 50 cents for a baguette with a filling, about $1 for a noodle or fried rice dish.

Add in some trips, because much as you might be happy roughing it, there isn't alot of point coming here if you don't want to see any of the country! A day trip is between $5-10. There are 3 day trips along the Mekong advertised for $29. A cheap overnight on Halong Bay will be about $15-20.

Sorry, this is all in dollars, I can't do with trying to translate it into pounds, and I don't have a pound sign on my keyboard!

The visa is actually the stinker, because in my opinion it's pricey. It's about 30-40 UK pounds for a 30 day visa, depending on where you buy it from. I don't think you can get a two month visa. You will have to get a 30 day visa and extend it in the country. But I might be wrong on that one. Check on the Vietnam embassy website in the Uk.

Don't worry, your budget sounds fine to me. Have you looked at Red River's guide to travel in Vietnam .

Hope this helps

Kate

Wow, Thanks guys.

Ur all so helpful. I was thinking I would be ok but just needed a little reasurance i guess. I would love to go longer mel but with work commitments i only have the 2months off.

Kate thanku for ur break down on prices and i know the conversion rate so thanku for the price in dollars. I didnt know a trip down the mekong would be so cheap so thats definately a massive bonus, I have found a trip to halong with my hostel of $70 i'm guessing thats pretty steep if i can get it cheaper but dont need to book it till i get there so i can wait... the visa will cost me 1500 baht in bangkok so i had planned for that i guess but the extention is annoying!

Just 1 little thought on the bus ticket, am i able to get on and off where ever I want or is this set stops? I wanted to bus a bit, use trains and maybe motorbike.

once i wana leave hcmc i'm going to go back to bangkok do you think it would be cheaper to fly or to get cambodia visa and travel thru there???

Thanku again for ur replies!!!

thanks

Hi

With the open bus you buy a ticket for the whole route and get off where you have predecided. But you can also just buy tickets as and when between which ever places you feel like. It's slightly more expensive that way but not alot more.

Flights within Asia are pretty cheap, check out air air asia prices from HCMC to Bangkok. It will probably be cheaper to fly, but it depends whether you want to see Cambodia as well.....

A possibility would be to just go for the 1 month visa to Vietnam and include more time in Cambodia, that way you skip the issue with extending visa for Vietnam also. Cambodian visas are $20 at the border. (+ a 5 dollar bribe if you are less of a stubborn ass than me). Gotta weigh what you would miss out on because of the shorter time in Vietnam versus the sights you get to see in Cambodia. Reply to this

And the answer is I'm sure you will have a great time in either one 😊

I haven't traveled south of Vinh in Vietnam so can't really say much about the southern parts, but from what I have read and heard I wish I could... Hanoi and Halong bay was nice, and I wish I had the time/planned differently to see other cities too (I did spend one night in Vinh coming from Laos and several more days in Nimh Binh waiting out my stomach bugs before admitting defeat and go to the hospital in Hanoi...). Anyways, there are lots more to see and do in Vietnam for sure so 7 weeks in Vietnam alone is probably doable without getting bored. Whether you think 4 weeks is enough to cover what you want to do and then move on is a question only you can answer.

That being said, Cambodia is well worth a visit too. Angkor Wat and all the other temples around Siem Reap is a highlight for many. It certainly was for me. Siem Reap was definitively one of the best parts on my se-asia trip. There are some more modern (but still old I'm sure) temples in Phnom Penh too, and then you have the killing fields etc. from more recent history if that is your thing. Dunno how much it is to see/do outside this main cities, except the bamboo train in Battambang, part of the fun is research though, so if you are interested check it out 😊

Bottom line is you have several options and plenty of time. Read some blogs, loan some travel books at the library and find out what you want to do. Doing research is a great way to pass time before you leave, and it will make you look forward to the trip even more. Reply to this

yes, u do need to apply a Vietnam visa...here are some info about how to obtain a Vietnam Visa...(Article extracted from 'Asia Travel Visa' on Facebook.)

For people who rarely travel, getting a Visa seems like such a hassle, but please don’t worry, as you do have several options. Let's discuss the three approaches that you can explore to obtain a Visa:

i. Apply from an embassy
If you are planning to visit Vietnam, you can apply for Visa at the Vietnamese embassy or consulate in your country. To search for an embassy near you, just use key words like 'Vietnam Embassy in (your country).’ If you can't find one, you can post your passport to a neighbouring country. Do check with the embassy before you post, or ask a travel agent if they can arrange a Visa run, which is basically the same thing, only they go to the embassy for you. With an embassy application, sometimes, you’ll be asked to attend an interview. Once the embassy issues the Visa, it will be stuck onto your passport before you leave the country.

ii. Visa on arrival
Some countries offer a ‘Visa on arrival’ (VOA) or ‘on-ground Visa’ option. The VOA counter will be clearly marked at the airport. Basically, your Visa will be stamped on your passport when you enter the country you are visiting. Usually, you will need to pay a stamping fee.

Some countries, like China, for example, require their citizens to show a valid Visa before flying out from country. In these cases, Vietnam can issue a pre-approval letter, approval code or invitation letter, which will verify that you will get a Visa on arrival.

iii. Electronic Visa
Countries like Cambodia and Australia have electronic Visas or e-Visas. Your application is performed online, and once approved, your Visa can be obtained by email or by downloading it from their website. You just need to print it out and attach it to your passport.
