hi guys , im sure im not the first to ask but ive seen a one-way flight to kuala lumpur thats a gd price and im ready to book .

i have herd and seen on the web that i may reqiure proof of onward travel and sufficent funds to be gained entry when i arrive

however i only plan to be in kuala lumpur a few days and then leave by train and travel to thialand , cambodia and vietnam spending a mounth or so in each place ( maybe less depending on if i like where i am )

will i need to prebook the train ticket before i leave the uk ?

and ...

if im traveling to thialand by train ( over land ) i will more than likely be there longer than the 15days free entry granted to turists so will i need a visa to be there longer ? will this be the same with vietman and cambodia ?

or can i just make my way through all wiv no visa or is this a bit riskey i only plan to be in each place a month or less Reply to this

Kuala Lumpur, I really wish I could offer advice because that means I would have been there, but sadly not yet.

Thailand, it is possible to enter the country with no proof of a date that your leaving, but they can deny you entry, and most likely will hassle you (although I have never entered on land, only by air so it might be different). it is very easy to do a visa run when in Thailand, all the tourist companies all over Thailand offer them for a fair price. (the tourist companies are a dime a dozen so don't worry about that part, just take your time picking a good one, or go on advice from other travelers). visa run is what it sounds like.. minus the running, plus some driving.
They drive you to the nearest border, you leave Thailand, turn around on the other side and come back in, with a brand new visa, and then the company drives you back into town.
Cambodia, we drove to the border from Bangkok, visas were set up for us while we had lunch at a small road side restaurant, and we were good to go for 30 days. it was a full day excursion driving to Siem Riep, and the road is pretty brutal, many people recommend flying as it is easier and saves time, but if given the choice I would probably do the road again. we met some amazing people on the bus and traveled through Cambodia with them, gives you some time to get to know some new people, in our case they had been places I wanted to go so got some interesting travel advice, and we got to see a lot of Cambodia, and were able to witness an amazing Cambodian sunset, which left me speechless.
it was one of those experiences that I wasn't entirely pleased with at the time, but looking back am glad I did it!
Vietnam Visa we arranged in Sihanoukville, took 24 hours, and we had a one month visa.

one last thing before I start rambling to the point on no return (I'm getting very excited for my trip coming and am more then willing to talk to a listening ear)
once you get into the Thailand/Cambodia/Vietnam/Laos area it is very easy to get around, there is a sort of loop that most backpackers were on that I met during this trip (many I met more then once as we were on the same sort of loop, in the major towns).
the specific route we went was Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos, and then through Thailand again. it makes an easy sort of circle to travel by (except for southern Laos which I have yet to see but am planning for this year)
when are you planning on going, and for how long?
are you planning on going any other countries? Reply to this

hi scott and kristy , thanks alot for the advice ! taken a huge weight of my mind , im just abit worried that i wont get in , i think im looking a bit to much into it and hearing lil bits and bobs of people being rejected .

i think i understand what u mean by a visa run , do u just go to tourist info places n they will help ? i gess other travellers will hopefully give me some pointers to

( you might get bombarded with questions now ....so sorry in advance )

for the visa for cambodia , i just go to an embassy in bangkok and organise it there , visa for vietnam go to an embassy in siem riep ect ect ?

my plan is to fly into kuala lumpur on a one way flight , stay there for 3 or 4days ( just to relax abit n look around ) , get the train/bus service through thialand , cambodia , and vietnam may be get involed with some volentary work on farms ect as i go along ,

that was it realy for asia . depending on money i would either go to oz or bali then oz or if i meet people see what they say

the ticket ive seen is for the 4th of july 2010 so hopefuly be traveling from then on

if i went to oz id try and get a years working visa and work my way down the east cost ( maybe fiji after depending on money ) then usa after and home ....

im going on oneway flights so im flexible if i meet like minded people n if they dont mind could tag along with them for a bit

im going to phone the thia and malaysian embbasys here in the uk to see what they say realy dont want to get jected at the start of my trip

is it a wise idea going on one way tickets ? Reply to this

yea pretty much. I never did a visa run personally, but met many many people in Thailand who had been there for months and months and had no problems. I think all you need is to plan a day ahead of time, and then you catch the bus the next morning, they arrange everything else for you.

and don't worry about the questions, its good to be able to help, and hopefully be helped when I have questions!! 😊

Cambodian visa was organized for us the day off. we paid for the tour bus which took us to within half an hour drive of the border, and ate some lunch (not sure if this was included in the price or not), they gave us the forms which we filled out, got everything organized for us and brought us our visa's, we loaded back on the bus and they drove us to the border, which we then walked across (and was an interesting experience let me tell you, theres a huge casino and hotel half way between the thai/cambodian border) Reply to this
