The Plan..

Getting super excited on the final count down to our trip!!
14 years ago, January 15th 2010 No: 1 Msg: #99779
as the title says we're both getting majorly excited! I wanted to share our plan (as of right now, the details are most likely going to change constantly) for our trip starting March 8th (in the middle of the freaking night)

SO we are leaving Vancouver Canada (goodbye rain!) March 8th, super early in the morning, flying to Bangkok (layover in Hong Kong for two hours), and trekking through Thailand for a month. Now because Thailand is our first destination, and we want to go through China, we are routing from Thailand into Laos, traveling south to Cambodia, and then crossing into Vietnam in the south and working up to Hanoi where we plan on traveling on land into China, from there it's a bit foggy as to what our plan of action is.
(side note, I was in Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam and Laos in 2006 so am fairly familiar with the area but am expecting things to have changed since then)
I was hoping for three months in China, I'm thinking we'll be there for closer to 30 days, possibly two months but that's pushing it. I am also interested in Japan, and might look into the possibility of flying from Hanoi to Japan and then on to Beijing.

From China our hopes were to go through Tibet into Nepal and then India, but have gotten Pakistan into our heads the past few days and are considering China - Pakistan - India, and then a side trip from India to Nepal (as I said though, this is very likely to change, before we leave and/or once we're on route)
from India, I've always had a major thing for the Maldives, we're not leaving this option out but it doesn't look possible this trip because of pricing (worth a mention though).
after India we were considering the possibility of taking the trans-Siberian through Russia to St. Peters-burg, and then working our way into Norway. Trans-Siberian is also very up in the air because of cost, if it turns out to be something we can't afford it will be straight on to Norway, where we plan to live and work for a few months before figuring out our Europe and Africa Plan Of Action! (Scott is Norwegian and has family there which is the major factor for our decision to go here after Asia).

We're giving ourselves between a year and a year and a half until we get to Norway, thinking of arriving there sometime early - mid summer and leaving before the bad winter hits as I (Kristy) am not a fan of the cold!!

I feel quite confident that we have our visa problems worked out, we have one last Typhoid pill to take and are complete with the vaccinations we will need for this leg of the trip, have the majority of our travel supplies (still a few odds and ends to pick up), and have quite a bit of our stuff sold (just trying to get rid of our car without too much of a lose money wise.. speaking of which, anyone want a 2007 honda civic coupe?? lol jk.. or not..)

If you have done anything like this, or have any advice for traveling in any of these areas I would LOVE to hear it, or if you plan on being in any of these areas over the next year we're always happy to meet new people!

timing wise, we're planning about one month per country with exceptions. Japan - two weeks, China - anywhere between a month and 3 months, India, anywhere between 4 months and 6 months, if we go to Nepal - two weeks to a month, Pakistan - two weeks to a month (we haven't looked into where we could go yet, we just know that we're very interested in going there). Russia - 30 days (trans-Siberian is 14-20 from what I've seen), and then to Norway for 6 months to a year depending on how much I freak out about the fact that it gets close to 40 below in the winter and the amount of snow is more then I can even imagine.

sorry for the SUPER long post, and I hope it's not too boring. I'm not a writer or journalist of any sort, but once I get started I can go on and on!! 😊 Reply to this

oh and speaking of south east asia, has anyone heard anything about this rumored 15th edition of Lonlehy Planet's Southeast Asia on a Shoestring? Amazon has it with a release date of March 1st, Chapters/Indigo has it with a release date of March 15th, I'm curious as to which is correct as we leave on the 8th, and I would love to pick it up before we leave. Don't fear the Norwegian winter that much.

This winter been extremely cold, and still there are only a few places that reach -40. Most populated areas is close to the sea which makes the winters milder. Most places doesn't get that much snow either. We are on maybe a foot atm. Snow and cold is not what you want to worry about, usually the bigger problem is that it stays around 0 so what little snow is there melts and freeze and you get ice everywhere. Then you get +1 and the ice gets wet and super slippery.

The cold is nice, give me minus 20 over slippery ice any day 😊

Another issue in Norway could be your budget, its a very expensive country. Reply to this

-40 scares me!! anything below 0 scares me lol. I'm from Vancouver Canada, (except for last winter which was freaky enough, I went to Mexico for most of it) and am used to rain being winter weather not snow!! my boyfriend has lived there has his life and is used to it though so we'll so how things go.
the budget thing I'm not overly worried about, he can get a good job there as soon as we land. he has half his family and friends there still so we won't be completely stuck in a new country, which is why we chose Norway as our sort of work layover country. moneys pretty good once you start working (as long as you watch what your buying).
