We need to get to Beijing from Laos around the 18th Feb (straight after Chinese New Year) ! We are going to travel from Laos to Kunming to get on the train line straight to Beijing. How do we buy tickets from Laos so we can guarantee a place on a sleeper train? Ive checked some online ticket companies but some are upto $100 more! We cant afford this! Is the only way to get a reasonable priced ticket is to arrive 5 days early at the train station or can agencies book them in Laos for collection in China? I know that after Chinese New Year the trains are extremely full and early booking is essential! Please help! Or can anyone recommend cheap flights from Laos or Kunming region to Beijing?

Honestly speaking, it is very difficult to get a rail ticket in China, especially the period around Chinese New Year. Millions of workers and passengers travel by train because it is much cheaper than flights or taking buses.
I just check the rail way schedule for you. There are 2 trains heading to Beijing from Kunming.
K472/K473 (Kunming 10:32----Beijing 10:48 of the next day) Hard seat:RMB 326($ 45) Hard sleeper: RMB588($ 87); T62 (Kunming 20:43----Beijing 11:08 of the next day) Hard seat:RMB 320($ 45) Hard sleeper: RMB578($ 87).
If you can make friends with some one who live in Kunming, he or she will help you buy the ticket for you in advance, which I think is the best way for you. Online ticket companies is benefit-orientated, so it is normal to offer you than $ 100.
Pitifully, I don't live in Kunming so I cannot help you. May you find a friend in Kunming and Wish you a nice journey in China. Reply to this
