Hello Sadia 😊

Phukett is a popular tourist destination, especially Pathong beach. It will be easy to find a hotel and there will be lots of transport from the airport.

Maybe what you should do is book a package holiday, that includes the plane ticket.

Night life (is it safe to move ‘rroung with my kid?)

Yes, it is very safe. Thai people are amazing considerate of parents with little children.

I dont know about babyfood, because my daughter was already 5, when I first took her to Thailand. Hopefully somebody else knows.

Hi Mell:

Thnx a lot 😊

Ive already reserved my plane ticket (AirAsia) and planning to roam round by my own. In fact package tour is usually with tight schedules do that-go there...in rush concept that i don like 😱 but yes once i reach there i may go for the pre-set tour plan for Phi Phi island (heard a lot on this island).

Moreover this is the first time we are traveling with my kid....so a bit tensed...really donno how he gonna react!

You could easily just fly over there and then look for accomodation and travel around. Bus transport is very good and goes frequently. All you really need is a copy of a guide book such as the Lonely Planet, to tell you everything you need to know. I think it is worth buying that book, if you intend to travel independently.

And people everywhere in Thailand will help you with your child. They used to hold my daughter, when I had too much stuff to take off the bus, they used to watch her everytime I had to give something else my attention. One time, I lost her in a huge crowded market. I was just about to panic, but all the market vendors called to each other to find her and they had her back to me within a minute. There were endless kindnesses I was shown because I had a little kid. Thailand is an excellent choice for you and your baby, especially if you are travelling without another adult to help you. Sadia,
From the airport, you have 3 options to get to Patong! There is a bus which goes to Phuket town first then to Patong (cheap - 30 baht - i think - but takes almost 2 hrs), minivan (we paid 100 baht/person. You have to wait for the van to fill before it leaves. And they jam as many as they can into it. Sit in the front seat if its empty - more room) or a personal taxi (400 baht - which for the 3 of you makes the most sense imho - quick and only 3 allowed).

Tours - If you just want to go to Phi Phi - take the ferry. If you want to do some snorkeling and beach w/ your son and hubby, be cautious of the speed boat tours as jr. may get very sea sick in the speed boat if the waves are even mediocrally high as the ride can be rough. DO NOT SIT IN THE FRONT OF THE BOAT!
Elephant rides, monkey shows, reptiles shows etc are abound.

Kids - Perfectly safe to move around Thailand w/ kids as Mel has stated. Friends of ours have just come back from an extended stay in S.E.A and can only rave about how well the majority of Thai people treated their kids. Of course common sense is still required. Monkeys are not plush toys. They are wild animals.

Baby Food - rice, steamed vegetables ground up with a fork, noodles chopped up.... all my friends did w/ their 1 year old. I remember seeing baby food at Big C or was perhaps it was Tesco Lotus! Start your kid on rice now and the insides of spring rolls. You'd be amazed at how well that works. You'll also find sweet corn for sale (niblet style). Sorry I couldn't be more help to you.

Hotels/Guesthouses - What's your budget per night in Baht?

Weather - expect temps around 33 degrees

Hi Jason:

Thanks a lot for the valuable info 😊

Most probabily i'll grab a cab or Bus but totally depended on the condition of my son............earlier me n ma hubby used to roam'rround in any transport avalable where ever we went but i guess those days are gone 😱.

Tours - I want to visit Phi Phi, Krabi and few other islands, will definately take the ferry! Is there any possibility of getting sunburn in the ferry? Do the ferry have roof? What else to explore in Phuket?

Baby Food - Great idea! I've already started rice, veg and noodles chopped up 😊
Hotels - my budget is arround 50 to 60 USD per night....want to stay near by Patong beach.

Thanks,

Hi Sadia,

When I was at Patong Beach I stayed at the Baa Nern Sai.

Rooms were large, staff were friendly and breakfast was free. It's walking distance, but uphill, from the beach/centre of town (they have a free shuttle).

Sun screen is advisable whenever around water as it reflects the suns rays all to well. Weather permitting, you'll probably want to sit outside on the ferry to ease motion sickness but also to enjoy the breeze but you can sit inside if you want.

I'm not an expert on the Island by any means but you can check out a person who I think is.
Jamie Monk runs an awesome blog with lots of info on the area. He's got some young kids as well so you benefit from that as well. Just follow the links on the left of his page.

While we were there, we rented scooters to circumnavigate the Island and go sight-seeing. We spent some time on the several different beaches around the Island, went diving, went to several night markets, visited Wat Chalong, did a self guided walking tour of old Phuket town, explored downtown Phuket town, The Big Buddha, Chalong pier, Simon Cabaret, Phuket Fantasea, went on a gem scam ride, etc.

Although it may seem like a lot of money, go to Phuket Fantasea (I didn't opt for the meal served there though). It's part Broadway musical (in Thai) about Kamala and part store set in a theme park like setting w/ no real rides. Go as early as you can to get into all the little free attractions. You can see animals like white tigers, and they have an entire aviary of birds in different themed rooms. You can have supper there if you so want. Its a large buffet style.
The building that houses the theatre has an amazing facade that we wish we could have gotten pictures of when it was still light out. It looks like a huge old stone temple. The show is quite amazing as well. Its all in Thai but who cares. You can understand it all just by the actions. The production includes elephants and other trained animals along with a rain storm, right on stage. We were totally surprised at the amount of thought and money that went that went into this. (probably the best part of Phuket in our opinions).

I could go on. Reply to this

How'bout Phi Phi Island? Is it a good place to stay or one day tour (from Phuket) is sufficient to check out the Maya bay and other interesting islands?

Can anybody suggest me on the Kho Phi Phi (ferry ticket price, timing, good hotels). Reply to this

I found Phi Phi an okay place to visit. It was very beautiful in many ways. Of course the prices were a tad more expensive but there were deals to be had there.
You can take a snorkeling trip from Phuket that will take you to Maya Bay, Monkey Bay, Lohsamah Bay, Pileh Bay, Viking Cave, Phi Phi Don, Hin Klarng and Bamboo Island which runs anywhere from 900 baht to 2000 baht per person depending on who you book thru and how bad they want to fill the boat. Haggle w/ them and try and bring it down a few hundred baht. This will include a ride to and from the pier to your Guesthouse and a lunch that will consist of most likely rice, Som Tam, spaghetti and meat sauce, fresh fruit, chicken, fish and panang curry on Phi Phi. This will give you a brief taste of the area and very brief taste of Phi Phi. Judging by the numbers that do this, it may be the easiest option for a full day trip.

Or you can opt to Ferry across which I think is around 300 - 400 baht (I can't remember nor can anyone I know that has taken the ferry). Speedboat will be quicker but obviously more expensive.
As for lodging, you have a large choice but try and get there in the morning for a better pick of the places available.

Have fun! I'm really envious of your upcoming trip as I can't afford to go anywhere far this year. Reply to this

Welcome to Phuket,
I have been living here for the past 5 years so I will give you my advice.

I am not sure why you would like to stay in Patong.

Personally I would recommend Kata or Karon which is south of Patong and Kamala or Surin which is North.
I would never recommend Patong to anyone who is wanting a nice holiday.

Nai Harn is my favourite beach in Phuket

Avoid Tuktuks at ALL costs, they are dangerous as well as rip you off left right and centre. The cars (which also rip you off) are safer at least. Personally though, if you can rent a car you will be far better driving around the island yourself. Just don't park where you see TukTuks, or you could be in trouble. Last week a guy was attacked for parking when a tuktuk driver told him not to park there. He was beaten and his arm was broken. http://phuketwan.com/tourism/phuket-tourist-man-beat-family-car-park-11968/

Night life is perfectly safe, just be sensible as with any country in any world.

You can buy babyfood from pratically anywhere, but remember that the product will not be 100%!t(MISSING)he same as from your own country. So this could upset the babies appetite so bring what you can from home.

the Weather right now in Phuket is 32'C but it has been raining, which is unusual, as we normally get no rain for 3 months. Bring light clothes, nothing that is thick as you won't be cold AT ALL. There maybe a slight breeze at night, (highly unusual) that you may need a sleeved t-shirt or something.

As you leave the airport, you will be hounded by people getting you in their taxi. ignore them. If you turn RIGHT you will get to a metered taxi (called Taxi Meter and bright yellow). This is a misconception as its a set price. They will tell you how much they will charge, please tell the driver to take his time and travel and "normal" speeds. In Thai - Mai Rell - not fast.

Avoid limousine taxis - absolute maniacs.

Phi Phi, isnt as nice as it used to be. I personally would take the ferry to Koh Lanta, as its by far a nicer place and you can get the Ferry there, as its just about 4km the other side of Phi Phi island.

Anyway - I hope I haven't scared you too much!

I hope this has been informative for you.

Suksan
