Hi there

Has anybody travelled overland from Saigon - Phnom Penh and then from Phnom Penh - Bangkok or does anybody know of a cheap way to do these two journeys?

Many thanks

Hi Charles,

I did that trip years ago. The way I did it was by minibus from Saigon to the Mekong Delta, then two days through the delta, followed by another minibus ride to Phnom Penh. It was good fun -- I had great travel companions. I'd recommend it. It's a pretty common package on offer in Saigon. Reply to this

You can go by bus from Saigon to Phnom Penh. I think it takes something like 6 or 7 hours. Every travel agent in Saigon is selling tickets.

From Phnom Penh to Bangkok you can also go by bus. Again you can book a package from Phnom Penh. You could also do it yourself by taking a bus from Phnom Penh to one of the borders, crossing and getting another bus at the other side.

Bus travel in SE Asia is really cheap and very simple to do. Reply to this

Mekong Express bus is the only way to go Saigon to Phnom Penh. Very comfortable and you stay on the same bus for the whole trip! The time before that I took a different route I lost my book in the seat back no problem except I didn't get to read the final 40 pages of a 600 page book AHHHHHHHHHHHH and the air conditiong didn't work! but the microphone did extolling the guesthouse that is horrible in a more horrible location that the bus companies runs for half the trip AHHHHHHHHHHHH!

Phnom Penh to Bangkok I go through the route that takes you towards the Cardamons and Sihanoukville you turn north at Sre Ambel and then go through one of the last remaining old groth forests in Asia traveling through 3 different watersheds and then you are at the border. "Don't get off the boat" keep moving byMini bus to Trat 110 baht maybe alittle more then get the Thai National bus to Bangkok less than 250 baht if I remember it ws like 219. If you have time the night market in Trat is allot of fun. and there are some decent cheap guesthouses on the river in Trat nice little town if you are lookingto see some of the real stuff.
