Mother and Daughter: Where to go in NE India?

Wondering if anyone can recommend places to visit on the way from Delhi to Nepal. 3 week trip.
14 years ago, August 24th 2009 No: 1 Msg: #84158
I'm going to India for 3 weeks beginning in Mid-October; flying into Delhi.
I think i'm planning to stay in the North-Eastern section of the country, as i hope to go to Nepal for part of the time.
Other than the usual tourist areas (agra, varanasi), can anyone recommend any places to visit in this part of the country? I hope to visit an ashram or two, so any advice on that front would also be appreciated.
i am a 28-year old female who will be traveling with her 55-year old mother. i am fairly experienced in traveling in developing countries, but have never been to India before.
my mother hasn't left the U.S. in 30 years. She is very excited about the "spiritual experience" she hopes to have -- understandably i am concerned about keeping her safe (and, of course, us having a great "adventure" 😊 together).
thanks to anyone who is willing to take the time to help me out. 😊

you can visit kolkata formerly know as calcutta..Its a great place to enjoy the indian cluture. You can actually see the indian culture very closely from kolkata. You can take help of following web pages:http://www.india-travel-and-tourism-information.com/calcutta.html http://www.kolkata.org.uk/tourist-attractions/index.html . Moreover the belur math and dakhineshwar kali temple in kolkata will give you the excellect spritual experience. You can also vist santiniketan which just nearby kolkata.Santiniketan is place to enjoy nature and peace together very closely. Santiniketan, literally means abode of Peace and a place reverberating with the memory of the great poet Rabindranath Tagore, is the embodiment of peace and tranquility and the world renowned Visva Bharathi University is located at this place.please look into the website. http://www.mustseeindia.com/Santiniketan
There lots of place nearby kolkata where you can see the real and actual india and enjoy.
And moreover from kolkata nepal is also not very far as you have plan to travel nepal too.
So enjoy your stay in India....

Dear Morgan, you can visit quite a few places while you are in India for 3 weeks. You can do the tourist destinations like Delhi - Agra - Jaipur (commonly known as Golden Triangle).

If you are looking at being at Ashrams - then you can travel to Delhi - Srinagar - Badrinath - Rishikesh - Haridwar (This is a Pilgrimage Tour).

If you are going upto Varanasi then you can plan your travel from Delhi - Gwalior - Orchha - Khajuraho - Varanasi and go on toward Nepal from Varanasi.

If you would be keen on Wildlife then you can travel with your mother to Corbett - Ranthambhore - Bharatpur - there are nice places in Nepal too where you can indulge in wildlife such as Royal Chitwan National Park and Sagarmath National Park.

India is a safe place; you would need to follow basic safety practices like any other place in the world. If you are two women traveling, do look up reputed Tour companies - they take care of accommodation, travel and sight seeing, plus its a lot safer since you'd be in a group.

Avoid traveling alone late at night and trusting strangers with luggage and money. Dont leave valuables in the hotel. Dont tip Auto and Cab drivers. Insist on bottled water while in India and Nepal.

Do write back should you need more details and have a great trip!

Hello Morgan 😊

I flew into Delhi with my daughter and boyfriend last December. As well as Agra, we visited Haridwar and Kurukshetra. Haridwar is not too touristy and Kurushetra even less so. You can check out my photos of that trip in this blog if you want. We were there for 3 weeks too.

Hey Morgan,
3 weeks would be a good enough time. As already been suggested by other bloggers you can do many offbeat places in India.
I have put in a few more

Mandu - Madhya Pradesh - Central India - This is a medieval town in the heart of India and has lots of palaces and gardens, that tell the story of an age long gone.

Orcha - Central India in the state of Madhya Pradesh -A mix of temples, palaces, a village , river flowing by the jungle.

Ujjain - It is one of seven scared cities for the Hindus. Tourist sites in Ujjain range from temples to observatory to palaces and heritage structures.

Mandawa - A small town in Rajasthan that lies in the enchanting Shekhawati region. The Shekhawati region is referred to as an open air museum dotted by old mansions decorated with wonderful paintings and frescos.

Aurangabad - The cave temples of Ajanta and Ellora are amongst the best kept secrets of India. These 2000 year old sculptures and brightly coloured paintings are a feast for the eyes.

A few other things, you might have read about them already but nevertheless am writing them again. 😊

India has loads to offer and is a country with very warm and hospitable people. It is a safe country but
like any other destination, has it's own share of undesireable elements. Also India has a huge contrast of being conservative and being modern. So you will have to dress accordingly. Big Cities like Delhi/Mumbai/
would be okay with most types of clothes (spaghetti etc) but smaller towns like Orcha, Mandu etc you would have to be dressed conservatively. Also while visiting temples or any religious place dress conservatively.
Mostly people will be friendly and warm but be cautious of over friendly/over helpful strangers. It is perfect to shake hands and smile but it is a possibility some male strangers might interpret it otherwise.

Do not get intimidated/uncomfortable by getting stared at. In India people are habitual of staring, you might have to get used to it!

Also people might ask you personal questions. Do not get irritated as they mean no harm or judging you, but that's the way they get social!

Do not carry lot of money on you.
Carry your own medicines. You may not find the same brand or the same salt.

Have a very enjoyable and safe trip and do write in if you have any queries.
