- where to go and what to do?
14 years ago, July 8th 2009 No: 1 Msg: #78876
Heyy,
My boyfreind and I are traveling through southeast asia in November, we are hoping to hit Indonesia in January and we worked out we have up to 3 weeks to spend there. We have decided to stick primarily to Java and Bali before heading towards Malaysia.
We are hoping for any travel advise or tips or just suggestions on where to go or what to see whilst we are out there, and whether 3 weeks is a realistic time frame as this is our first time travelling !!
Any help would be much appreciated !! Thanks Reply to this

November is not really good month to travel to South East Asia. Its raining season but good luck to you guys. Jakarta is the biggest city in Indonesia, its good for 2-3 days if not 1 day but if you dont like big city, pollution and crime then try to avoid this city, traffic is crazy like Mumbai worse than Bangkok, Public transportation is not as good as other big cities. but if you love experience this city will give you alot of surprises. Depends on your budget, if you have alot of extra money to spend this city has a lot to offer.
if you are budget travellers, go to Jalan Jaksa, alot of backpackers there. if you have alot of money go to Kemang area... or you can go to west coast of Java and see Mount Krakatoa from the distance..

Take a train from Jakarta to Bandung. from Gambir station. Bandung is Factory Outlet City and alot of great cafe and restaurant. Indonesian called this city Paris Van Java but this far from Paris at all LOL. but its worth to go and check.

From Bandung go to Yogyakarta. ( Yogyakarta is the main tourist destination in Java beside Bali ) Do visit Museum and do city tour. and Go to Borobudur Temple the biggest Buddhist temple in the world. and go to Prambanan temple, the most beautiful Hindu temple in the world ( LOL at least for me ) check if they have Ramayana sendratari ( the traditional dance with full moon - Prambanan temple ). try to book a tour to Mount Bromo.. this is in east Java ( check google Image )

then take a flight to Bali. stay on this island at least 4 days. spend time in Kuta, Seminyak, Legian street, seafood at Jimbaran area, Nusa dua, Sanur, TANAH LOT ( BEST SUNSET IN THE WORLD ) , art and culture, a lot of stuff to do here and If you want to go to better beach do visit Lombok Island, you can fly or take a boat there. the island is soo close to bali but offer better sandy white beaches.

Final day if you have extra money. go to Komodo island ( google ) for one day...

Enjoy Indonesia the nature and the people and weird experience... LOL

Hi Guys,
What are your interests- nature- national parks, animals, volcanoes, temples, getting to meet the locals?
If you can give me a bit of an idea I will probably be able to help you with ideas. I have been to Indonesia 8 times since 1997 and my trip in 2006 was for 5.5 months. I spent 35 days in Java, 3.5 months in Sumatra- amazing place, 18 days in Aceh, 6 days in Bali, 5 days in Lombok and 6 days in South Sulawesi- Tana Toraja.

In my opinion 21 days is really too short to experience this amazing country.
I also have maps of different areas and information I can send you on Sumatra, Aceh, Java and Bali.
Send me a Private Message with your contact details.

Putu,
You have got to be joking trying to tell the travellers they can see all of this in 3 weeks Sumatra- north and west, Java- west central and east , Bali, Sulawesi north, south and Tana Toraja and Lombok north plus the Gilis and south including Kuta Lombok.
Anyone reading this post please IGNORE this guy he has no idea what he is talking about.
If you were to attempt to do all of this in 3 weeks I can tell you now you would be spending all your 3 weeks travelliing from Point A to Point B. Would never have any time to spend any time in any place.

Pamela- (been 8 times including 4 months in 2000 and 5.5 months in 2006.)
Huge country that needs lots of time to really see it and enjoy it. The people are just superb and it is a shame if you rush aorund so much and miss out on the chance to spend some time with the people and get to know them a little. Reply to this

Hi Nadya! Can u tell us why we should not go to Jakarta and Kuta? Am going to Indonesia next month, and would like to hear what others have to say on places I plan to visit. thanks.

Btw, how much time do we need to spend in Borobudur? I have a friend coming along who is a bit physically challenged. Thought we'd take it easy walking all the way up. But how much time is leisurely? Reply to this

Hi Liliram! Jakarta is just a complete mess! Nothing interesting there really.Pollution, crime, very very crowded, dirty, smelly and i think its just not good for tourist.

Well, idk what kind of trip do u actually looking for.Bali is good but something like Kuta is too crowded and short of boring these day.Too many people and too many seller.

Last time i went to Borobudur,i start very early in the morning. But i guess it ll take a day for Borobudur.its a long way tiring walking but its worthed! along the way there (not in borobudur area),there s many good restaurant and a silver shop.I love the jewelry there but make sure dont buy at the price they offer.I usually end up at 1/2 or 1/4 of the beginning price.

I m Indonesian but living outside country and i stop took my friend to something like Kuta.We love beach so we visit local /small beach that far but not many people there and obviously no annoying seller!!also small island like we,cubadak, banda and around lombok.highly reccomend Toraja! Garut is somehow a new Bandung, but still all good food came from bandung.

You should go to Ubud, Bali. It's one of the best place I've been. It's cool there and you'll love all the arts there (paintings, sculptures, etc) and also the rice terrace...
