Hi there
I plan to travel the length of Vietnam from HCMC to Hanoi and Halong Bay before moving on into Laos.
From HCMC I have 50 days to get myself back to Bangkok for my flight home.
Can anyone recommend a border crossing into Laos? I've heard that the northern crossing points can be more difficult so perhaps I should travel back south a bit and cross at Lao Bao?
I really don't know. Any advice appreciated.
Thanks
Reply to this Hi,
You can onlly cross at the international border gates.
The following are most popular:
1. Lao Bao (Hue provovince in Vietnam) - Dansavan (Savannakhet province in Laos) (connecting central Vietnam and South Laos). Popular, this makes use of the Road No.9, which is still being further developed with ADB's support. There is a lot of buses and transportation services from Vietnam's side. Ask in Hue or Danang, or even HCMC and Hanoi.
2. Cau Treo (Ha Tinh province in Vietnam) - (Bolikhamxay province in Laos). This route is popular for travel between North of Vietnam to Laos. Travel agents in Hanoi provide daily buses for this route with good price.
3. Na Mèo (Thanh Hoá province in Vietnam) - Namxoi (Huaphan province in Laos). Became international border in in 2004.
4. Tay Trang (Dien Bien Phu province in Vietnam) - Phanhuoc (Phonsaly province in Laos). A new one in upper North of Vietnam, just become international border gate in May 2009.
Do ask for more info in Vietnam. Good luck.

Reply to this Excellent. Thanks.
Do you know if you can gets visas for Laos at these border crossings?
Reply to this Entering Laos through the Tay Trang border will take you through some of the best of the Northern Wilds (connected by road) of Laos though the ride will be tough and dusty. Far as I know VOA for Laos is available at all borders with the fee ranging from 30USD to 40USD depending on your nationality.
