Hi all,
Me and a friend will be travelling the majority of South East Asia from October for a year. We have a direct flight from UK to Shanghai. We will then make our way down the coast to Hong Kong followed by Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, Malaysia, Indeonesia and onto Oz, NZ, Fiji, Hawaii, San Fran before returning home.
My question is: Whats the most cost effective way to get from Hong Kong to Vietnam? How long does it take and a rough idea on costs?
Many thanks and happy travelling!

You could go by train. This website is pretty comprehensive about train travel around Asia....

Flying is really expensive for some reason. There aren't any budget airlines that fly between Hong Kong and Hanoi at the moment.
Reply to this The only really cheap option as a one way would be to do Hong Kong-Bangkok and than Bangkok-Hanoi....try people like airasia.
You may also have a look at HongKong Express airlines....never fly with them but they are growing....don't use a one way, but look for the cheaper return valid one week, and don't use the return.
Train is the other option....will take you some times...like 1 or 2 days, but could be fun! You need to go via Kunming.

Yeah, that's true. You could fly from Hong Kong to Bangkok, then work your way from Bangkok, through Cambodia and up through Vietnam, and then across from Hanoi to Vientiene, through Laos and down through Thailand.
Or go the opposite way, up through Thailand, into Laos, across to Hanoi and down through Vietnam, into Cambodia and back to Bangkok.
But if you want to go overland then train looks like you best bet.
Reply to this I suppose you can take bus as well. I did take bus from hanoi to hong kong in april this year. It was suprisningly easy. =)
Reply to this Land would be the best option for me as i have loads of time to kill... however a flight down to Bangkok and doing a circle seems logical to me. Would anyone have any 'must see' tips for Shanghai & Hong Kong?
Thanks again for all your help 😉
Reply to this Hi...
I live in Shanghai...well..we are leaving soon. In Shanghai you feel more the atmosphere than seeing the site...but few obvious ones...Bund area, strolling the french concession, Yuyuan Gardens...for the museum, a must see is the "miniature" replica of Shanghai in the urbanisation museum, few great art museum...for walking around, getting lost in Taikang Lu little streets...and for sure the night life.
For Hong Kong, lived the 3 years...well, the obvious is rid the tram to the Peak. Go on the tram and the star ferry bewteen Kowloon and Central....I'm also a big fan of Lamma Island.
Whatever you do, you will enjoy it.
Have fun!
Peter

Reply to this Oh Joey, I forgot, climb the lupu bridge in Shanghai...I did an entry on it last month. Doesn't take much time, but it's great fun...and a LOT cheaper than the Sydney bridge.
