I remember chatting to you when planning the first trip. Can't believe we've been back 5 months already. Should only be a year before we're off again. Something to keep me motivated at work! Hope you're all having fun.
Reply to this wow such a relief to read all these stories - I guess everybody who is about to take off on the RTW trip is worried about the budget. I have not really panicked until recently as we are about to give our notice at work. Thanks for all the advise ;-)

It is so exciting to hear that you are ready to turn in your notice. Don't let the panic grab you! The worse thing is that you run low on money and have to come back a bit early but that is very unlikely to happen. You've been reading and planning for some time now and you will find how to moderate your budget on the road. Remember this is your first RTW not your last!
Really looking forward to your travels, keep those blogs coming.

Reply to this I too am planning this trip for the near future. I'm going to start in South East Asia and plan to spend most of my time between there, India, and South America, with a very brief stop over in Israel for a wedding, France, Spain.
I am from the US, so with the USD not being as valued as it use to be, I do find myself thinking about budgets often. I'll be leaving the country with around $28k USD, I'm not too worried. Slow travel is cheap travel, and this time around, I'm willing to take my time. I can already see that the most expensive parts are going to be flights. After three months in South East Asia, I am going to Israel, then I figure to India from there and the rest really is unknown.
Its rediculous how expensive one way flights are, but if you're willing to plan a bit more and buy two tickets at once, you can save a couple of hundred dollars. I still do feel its cheaper than an ATW ticket.
Counting down the days.......
Reply to this This is an amazing thread. I did near all my research for my SE Asia trip on travelblog and I am know looking to it once again to help me prepare for a 9-12 month trip to Africa. Three of those months will be spent stationary volunteering so I've got that part of my budget figured but could anyone give a little insight on general cost in Africa? I will start in South Africa and I plan (we all know how easy it is to deviate from a plan while traveling) to work my way North through Swaziland (cousin in peace corps there so some free lodging and travel guides), Moz, Malawi, Zimbabwe, Tanzania, Kenya and Ethiopia. I travel pretty cheap get by on eating once a day, don't mind hitchhiking and super basic busses and plan to use couchsurfer when available. I'm shooting for 10-12k US. Thoughts?

Also to add to anyone else doing research I did SE Asia for about 4500 us in 4 months and didn't ever worry about budget. I splurged on cruises, rock climbing even took a flight.
