Buying a Cell Phone in India

I am not sure if it is better to buy a used tri-band phone in the US and bring it to India or just buy one there? I know there are several threads on this, however I am not sure what is best after reading many of them.

Can I actually get a new phone in India for cheap - around Rs.1500? Or do you really need to do a lot of shopping and negotiating? Do they sell them in airports or are the costs very much inflated there? I will have to fly to Delhi, then to Chennai, then take a train for about 8 hours.

I am a little nervous about not having a phone for all of that travel until I reach my destination where I could buy one. I could purchase a phone in Delhi's airport, however I understand that all of my calls would be "roaming" as I would no longer be in Delhi. Alternatively, I could wait until I arrive at the final destination (where I will be for several weeks) and buy a phone there.

Or, I could purchase a phone in the US and get a basic card as soon as I get the chance. I would be able to get a good used phone for about $45 USD. I would greatly appreciate any advice, experience or recommendations. Reply to this

Hello Mr Ryan. For about 1500 Rupees to 2000 Rs U can get a basic phone in India.. And yeah buy the sim card where u stay for several days..

But connection I am not sure. Depends on whether u wanna go for prepaid or postpaid. I wud suggest prepaid coz postpaid u tend to get ripped of sometimes. It takes 24 hours to get the sim activated for prepaid. But I think postpaid U wil have trouble with all the formalities and address VERIFICATION AND ALL THAT. aND U ALSO need to deposit money and pay monthly rental for postpaid.

AIRTEL is the arguably the best service provider with good network coverage in India. Its also gives u good tariffs , free sms and stuff.
