Advice on where to stay on Koh Lanta for Christmas/New Year please
14 years ago, May 16th 2009 No: 1 Msg: #72946
Hi all,

I am currently living and working in Central Thailand, and my parents plan to visit over the Christmas and New Year period.

They would really like to stay on Koh Lanta, and Island I've not visited, so am looking for any advice/suggestions on both areas/beaches to stay on or specific hotel recommendations.

They will be staying on the island for 2 weeks, so I would like to find them somewhere that has a little going on, eg a couple of restaurants and bars within walking distance of their hotel, but I also think I want to avoid the very Northern busier beaches as they do enjoy peace and quiet over a lot of hussle and bustle.

The hotel will ideally have a pool and a fridge in the room, and be close to a beach (although doubt there is any other option!) It doesn't have to be right on the beach, but an easy walk away. The room can be basic, AC and TV are not necessary. But it should be clean and secure. Their budget is around 2000 baht a night, stretching to 2500 for something that really stands out. I do realise everywhere will be charging peak season prices during their visit, so their money won't go as far.

Thanks to anyone who can offer any insight,

I dont think you will enjoy only being on Koh Lanta for 2 weeks. I enjoyed 4-5 days there. You need to rent a scooter and be prepared to drive around the island on it. thats the only way to see lanta. The beaches immediately south of the pier are bustling and touristy. Heading further south there are a lot of much cheaper options that are a lot less crowded. riviera beach resort is 10 mins south of the pier on the west side of the island. its 700baht a night for the upgrade room with AC. You could rent a 2 bedroom home on the ocean for 2000thb. Be prepared many of the islands beaches are lava rocks a few yards from shore. Further off the beaten path you could stay at one of 2 hotels closest to the national park. Much more expensive (but still within your budget) and its a nice way to see the national park via elephant or AWD vehicle.

Personally, I would visit the other islands in the area. Koh Phi Phi is my favorite, tho it might be a little too 'beach party' for your parents. They could however go to the far side of the island and stay on long beach, and just take a cheap water taxi to visit the more busy side of the island.

Really, all of the islands in the area are worth visiting, and its cheap to hop on a ferry to hop between them.
