Ok, in order:
Singapore has dorm style accommodation. About $20-25 Singapore dollars a night. Check out http://www.betelbox.com/. We stayed there for 10 days and loved it.
Malaysia: Also has some hostels.
Thailand: Has mainly guesthouses. Very few hostels. You can get a cheap double room in a guesthouse for 250 baht upwards in a lot of cities. Bangkok and Pattaya are abit more expensive, probably about 500 +. For the cheapest you get a room and a bed with a fan and a shared bathroom. For abit more money you get air con, en suite bathroom.
Laos is similar to Thailand, but rooms are cheaper. We got rooms for a couple of US dollars a night when we were there 2 years ago. I guess it's probably gone up a bit since then.
Vietnam is mainly rooms in guesthouses/small hotels. There are a couple of dorms. To rent rooms to tourists, hotels have to provide certain facilities such as an en suite bathroom, air con, a tv and a fridge, so you get more for your money. There aren't really places of the cheap room and a bed style that you get in Thailand. Rooms are about $10-20 a night.
Cambodia is similar to Thailand. There are some really cheap places, just a few US dollars a night.

Sorry, I can't help you with China, Hong Kong or India as we haven't been. I'm sure someone else can fill you in.

Have a look at www.travelfish.org
It has lots of listings of guesthouses with links and costs. It might help you to plan.

If you are on a budget and love to backpack, then I would suggest registering with Couch Surfing and you can look at people willing to host you. This way, you also get to live with people understanding the culture and tradition of the place. Most CouchSurfers also would show you around the city and give you useful tips on travel. Take care with some of the hostel booking sites mentioned above when staying in hotels and guesthouses where there are two of you sharing a double room, rather than dorm style hostels. We found that they tend to charge you per person staying in the room, rather than for the rental of the room. So it often works out more expensive than to book a room directly with the hotel, or with an agent who books double rooms. Reply to this

Hi Brent and Sami,

I've stayed at A-One Inn in Bangkok, and Spicy Thai in Chiang Mai, and would definitely stay at both again.

A-One Inn guesthouse was about 500 Baht for a single room - excellent location, has a cheap 24hr internet cafe in the reception area.

Spicy Thai was about 700 baht I think, but included free breakfast, free internet, and the place has an excellent atmosphere. They organise a lot of activites for people staying there, aside from booking organised regular tours on your behalf.

Have a great trip :-) Reply to this

Hello Brent and Sami 😊

In many of those countries you named, there is no need to stay in dorms. Double rooms come inexpensively in many. Double rooms can be available for less than 10 Euros per night. Not in all places though, so dorms are a good option when they are not.

Hi,

I recently got back from three months around SE Asia.

I also stayed at A-One Inn in Bangkok many times. They staff are always friendly and the rooms are clean. They were 600 baht for two single beds. Which worked well for my and my partner. We stayed in double rooms or twin share rooms all across asia and prices ranged for, $8 to $15 each.

I found Laos and Cambodia a bit more expensive as they use USD there. In Cambodia everything is in USD, the local currency is used like coins. USD$2.5 for a big curry and we bargained a room for USD$8 a night in Siem Reap.

Around Thailand Phuket is expensive com paired to the rest of Thailand, but still cheap com paired to the rest.

We got the train from Bangkok to Chiang Mai, Sleeper train. Then bused to the boarder of Laos and got the 2 day slow baot to Luang Prabang then bused to Vientiane. Was a good trip. Take a big book for the boat ride and something soft to sit on. 8 Hours on the boat is a long long time. But was worth it for the scenery.

We founded the bused round Thailand to be great. Can book on the day or that morning and most of them are modern with air con. And there VIP buses are Great! Huge seat and a meal. Not that much more in cost.

We trained from Singapore to KL to Hat Yai with is just past the boarder from Malaysia. The sleeper trains were good. A fun experience to have. If you do go that way.
Make sure you go to the bus station!!!!!!!!!!
Don't get a bus from the shop across the road when you get off the train. We brought a ticket from him to Bangkok, the bus was meant to leave at 11. By 2pm after them saying soon soon soon, we demanded our money back and went to the bus station and got a normal public bus which was fine but had to wait till 6pm.

My biggest tip is don't rush. Take it easy, We were mean't to go to Vietnam but ran outta time and money cos we spent more time in other place. Take it as it comes. Its Asia. Some things will always not go to plan but just be ready for it and go with the flow. Reply to this
