... and while planning it I've been nothing but exciting, but am suddenly feeling sick with fear- and I have never felt this before :s. Can anybody reassure me that it will be okay? I'm going alone. For 6 weeks... Is there anyone in the same situation? I thought loads of people went alone but have now been reading they arn't and it is actually very difficult to meet people. Would really prefer not to be on my own for 6 weeks now :s Reply to this

Hello Julia 😊

.....feeling sick with fear-

That is how I felt on the day before I flew to Iran. Things are never all that scary, after the initial culture shock when you go to most countries.

Can anybody reassure me that it will be okay?

It will be OK. I have been to Thailand 3 times, and am still alive.

When you get to Bangkok, head straight for the Khao San Road. You will find lots of backpackers there to hang out with. The tourist bus at the airport will tell you when to get out, or alternatively all the taxi drivers know where it is. There are lots of guesthouses there too for you to stay in too.

I thought loads of people went alone

I went alone once, and with a 5 year old the other 2 times.

Just go! I was a bundle of nerves on my first solo overseas trip, and was even dry retching in the shower two hours before I was to leave my parent's home!

However, many solo overseas journeys later, I can assure you that you are about to embark on one of the most incredible experiences of your life! Once you arrive at the first destination and have found a place to stay, you'll wonder what you were so worried about.

Thankfully, I've never had such nerves since. There may still be a little anxiety about going to a new continent or different culture, it is a normal feeling - just like starting a new job. You wouldn't pass up the opportunity to take up that exciting job with a good pay because you are nervous, and the same applies to travel on your own! Reply to this

You'll be fine. We had the same nerves when we first left, it is the unknown after all. But it is something we have never regretted.

You will meet people easily, on the Khao San Road, on a trek in Chiang Mai, in various hostels. Be outgoing and friendly (even if you feel shy and scared) and you will be fine.

Have a great time!

And you might feel proud of how brave you have been later. That is usually what happens with me. I think, wow I was so terrified and I did it anyway.

So, what time is your flight? If you get any time, drop in here and let us know how your trip is going. Reply to this

Just got back from Thailand -my first time traveling alone (female) and I LOVED it. I met many others traveling alone-esp. females. Just do it- it will be great. Like others have said, there may be a little culture shock when you first arrive-but I had the time of my life. even a day tour does help to adjust and meet people.
Tell us what a great time you had when you get back! Reply to this

Hi Julia, its normal be to apprehensive before traveling. However, Thailand is a beautiful place and you'd love it. Like what everyone's mentioned, you dont have to worry. Just go on with your plans and you'll have such an amazing time - six weeks would be too short! Reply to this
