You will need a few days to travel this way by bus or train. it takes about 15 hours to reach Chinag Mai by train or bus, then you need 2-3 hours to get to the border town of Kon Khaen.

The boat trip takes to days. Yes, get some photos now to save time. You can book the boat trip from most travel agencies in Chiang Mai.

So you're looking at 3-4 days in total.

Otherwise, you can fly straight to Vientiane in Laos in about 4 hours I think. Enjoy your trip. Reply to this

Hi Bobby,

Could you possibly let me know some info about the train you got - where you got it from, etc. I'm doing a website about travel in Asia and it would be really useful.

Thanks

www.seat61.com is the best site for train travel.

Get the photos before hand as they don't take them at the boarder.

Also you need USD to pay for your Visa. Depending what country you are from the price is from about $25 to $35 all is USD.

Also when you leave Laos. You can't take the money out of the country. No where else will exchange it for you. So now i am stuck with about 200k in Kip lol Oh well.

The train station in Thailand I can't remember the name of the town but it's the end of the line is very near the boarder. Only pay about 40Baht to get to the boarder. Don't let them rip you off!
