For immigrants (first gen, second, third, etc), what's it like returning to the country (or countries) of your roots? Is it different from traveling to other countries?
Hi Jo and Mell. Back again!
Welcome back. 😊
Did you have much luck with finding your Irish ancesters? So many emmigrated from Ireland, that it may not be Ireland that you find them in. 😊
I met an American guy here in Munich. His father emmigrated to the US with him and his mother stayed in Ireland with his sister. The parents didnt stay in touch, so either did the sister and brother. He visited the village where his mother and sister used to live and could find no sign of them and nobody knew them, which is unusual for a village where everybody usually know everybody else.
Reply to this Not much luck with Irish ancestors so far. So many records were destroyed during "The Troubles" that Irish research can be really difficult. Hope to go there in a few weeks when we get back from Morocco. Despite the Irish connection, mostly on my mother's side, I don't feel much connection with Ireland.

There is a place in Dublin that does research like that. Dont know how effective they are though.
Reply to this Irish Family History have a website but they charge 5 just to look at a record. When you don't know whether it is useful till you see it, it is very expensive every time the record is not related to your family. Talk about a rip-off! Sadly many of the genealogy sites have gone the same way.
It has been cheaper for me to travel from Brighton to Edinburgh, stay in a B&B for a week and do research in the archives each day than to do the same research via the Scots People website. Off to Dublin next week for the same reason. At least it gives me an excuse to visit places.
