There is a hill station near Mumbai. I went almost all the way up to it last time I was there. Didnt have time to stay there, but wanted to look at the nice scenery from the taxi on the way up. Does anyone know the name of this hill station. Maybe I will go there again, when I am in Mumbai this May. It is nice to get out of the city for a while.

I will be in Mumbai next month. I heard that Matheran hill station will be busy at that time of the year, with people crowding up there because of it being a couple of degrees cooler than in Mumbai.

Was anyone there in May before? How crowded is it? Will I still be able to find a hotel room at a good price? Reply to this

You would rather travel to Mahableshwar or Panchgani than Matheran. Matheran does not have much to offer except for red mud that spoil shoes n clothes forever and the constant fear of monkeys bullying you.

Honestly, Mahableshwar or Panchgani or Matheran is cooler than Mumbai but still quite hot. You may want to avoid weekends, specially 30th April to 3rd May - its a long weekend bcoz 30th n 1st are public holidays.

However, its very easy to find hotels in all these places even if you dont book beforehand, you can travel to any of these destinations and at the bus stand or taxi stand, there will be "representatives" - you can negotiate a good deal with them. Stick to your price - they will agree. Reply to this

I dont mind the red mud but the monkeys sound scary. I was bitten by one in Thailand and had to have a bunch of rabies shots because of it. 😞

I only have 9 days in India so cant stray too far from Mumbai. Last time I was in Mumbai, I meant to go to Matheran Hill Station but didnt have time. I did however go up the hill as far as the taxi goes because the views on the way up are nice too.

Thanks again Tanya 😊 Reply to this

Adventure travels to Matheran involve a two hours ascent in a toy train, with food and drinks and the monkeys jumping on and off as the valleys glides by. Don’t worry the moneys does not bite. They are friendly to the tourists. Alternately an 11 km jungle tour through the thick shady forest can get you there as well. October to May is the best time to travel to Matheran. Reply to this

Why not think about getting beyond the hill stations, many are crowded this time of year, especially at the weekend when people retreat from the plains to get out of the heat. How about doing a village stay nearby. Here's a suggestion for a village stay near Mussoorie, I posted this a few months ago, but now that the heat's picking up I should probably post it again.

Anyone know if there is internet access on Matheran hill station?

I had better warn my boyfriend that there might be a few days when he gets no emails because there might be no way to send them from the hill station. Reply to this

Hi Mell, you will have access to the internet in Matheran. There are cyber cafe's in the market and in many hotels. You may have to pay 20-40 INR/hour for this service. It may be more in the hotel but a cafe in the market would be cheaper.

And all blackberry addicts have the same Q before they travel! Reply to this

Thanks Tanya 😊 20 to 40 Rupees seems like an OK price. I didnt use the internet last Christmas when I was in India, so have no idea what it usually costs there. Reply to this

Infact its on 10-15 Rupees/hour in cities however they do charge more in tourist areas. However, ensure that you carry a valid ID, these days you cant surf in a public cafe without an identification bcoz of all these terrorist activities. Reply to this

in case you are in koidakanal and want to go to munnar, why not doing a track?
all local travel offices have guides who will be pleased to do it
and don't forgett to bargain for the rate .... at least to half if not a third from the original offer Reply to this

Hi,

just back from Manali and Dharamsala.

Mac leod Ganj (Dharamsala) is a cool place to stay and discover buddhism, Manali is not too bad if it is to trek (which I did : awesome).

Thank you,

good trip,
