Shopping Kuala Lumpar vs Hong Kong?

Doing a round the world trip with a stopover either in KL or HK, where is the shopping better?

The main reason for the stopover in either K.L or H.K is to do a little shopping, mainly clothes , nick nacks and possibly electonics( I have no issues with fake clothes Quicksilver, Billabong, Polo, Nike etc) . I'm not just materalistic we are also interested in the culture, people and food (being an ex-chef). If anyone has been to both places to make a comparison would love to hear from you. Alternatively I have been to Bangkok so how does K.L and H.K compare to Thailand. Reply to this

I have stopped in both HK and KL several times - and have visited for both food and shopping (electronics)

For me, KL probably has the better computer-related prices - Low Yat Plaza is the place to go. It also has other electroinic items, but it didn't impress me as much. However, I found HK better for camera-related equipment, particularly along Sai Yeung Choi Street (mainly between Argyle and Dundas street) in Mong Kok. The choice on this street was superb and it had a great atmosphere. There is also a good range of other electrical items. Don't buy anything electronic on Nathan Road.

If you are interested in food - then I would strongly favour KL over HK - the variety of food available in Malaysia is far broader than that in HK - not only do you have local Malay and hawker food, but there is also the Indian and European influence (Portuguese and English). For my mind, Malaysian cuisine is one of the four best I have ever tasted when travelling (Indian, Turkish and Ethiopian being the other three) - but in terms of variety and price - I would put Malaysia as my number one.

I cannot comment much on clothes in either place, but I perceived that HK was the better. I have stopped in Bangkok, and thought the clothes there to be cheaper than HK and KL. I did not look for electronics during my visit to Bangkok.

The added bonus with KL is that it is cheaper to stay than HK. The big minus with KL are the taxi drivers, most will seriously try to rip-off foreigners, so be on your guard. Reply to this

Hi,

Agree 100% with Shane. If you want high end clothing, HK is better....if you go for the more cultural stuff, stick to KL.

For computer and cameras, it's definitively HK....but if you don't intend to spend big, follow Shane advise, KL may bring you more.

Hi,

I experienced HK to be a great place to shop - there are many "outlet" stores that sell real clothes for way cheaper than elsewhere (lots of sports clothes/shoes, esprit, etc).

There is a lot of different kinds of food, a lot of Indian and Chinese, especially Cantonese style.

Have also spent some time (though less than in HK) in KL but I would recommend HK.
The people there are very, very friendly and next to the shopping you can also do quite a bit of sightseeing. The city has several islands where you can go hiking etc.

Hi,

as a local HK people, it's difficult for me to compare KL with HK, however I just came across an online travel magazine which provides detailed information about HK Shopping and KL shopping. I found the information quite informative and useful. Go to have a look from the following links!

Enjoy! : )
