Hello all

My Fiancé and I are geting married this year and we are looking to go to Thailand for our Honeymoon.
Due to work commitments we have had to cut it to just over 2 weeks. We would like to get as much of a feel for the place as possible in such a short time but appreciate that it's a large country.
We have looked at flights to Bangkok and would like to stay there a few days before we do a bit of island hopping starting at Phuket.
I have got prices for flights to Bangkok and then immediately onto Phuket but feel that we would be missing out not seeing something of Bangkok. How easy is it to get flights from Bangkok to some of the islands and then on from there ? Also my Fiancé would love to do a bit of a tour into the jungle on elephants, where can anyone recommend for this to be done ?? We have looked at some tours that go to the north but these look very 'touristy' and I can't stand being hearded aroung like cattle. Can anyone suggest a 5-6 day tour that has been recommended recently or that you have done personally.

Like I said in the title neither of us have been to Thailand before and short of asking people for an itinary we would just like to hear the opinions of experianced travellers of the region.

Many Thanks for any help in advance.

Jeremy

Don't bypass Bangkok! See the city for 2 or 3 days, get used to the heat and time changes. During this time you can make your local flights to Phuket or even to Chiang Mai if you want. My advice is to also see some of Thailand that is not beach related - like a visit to Chiang Mai.

There are some tourists who go out of their way to avoid stopping in Bangkok, usually they end up running around trying to make connections with very little time. Some tourists don't even have the right airport for their connecting flight. (Don Muang, on the other side of Bangkok also has flights to other cities in Thailand.) If you arrive late at night, even around midnight go right into town. Even up to 2 a.m. Bangkok is still active.

If you don't want to be on a tour with other tourists that can be done but you pay more! When you are with a bunch of other tourists you get a better rate. You can get private tours and treks using a travel agency if you want. A regular tour usually consists of a pick up at your hotel, then you head off to visit some village or scenic place - back on the van and repeat, they return you safely to your hotel. (Bring some TP and hand wipes when you go on tours or treks, by the way.) An organized tour is not as bad as you might think, besides being economical and informative you will meet other fellow tourists too! Up to you! There are lots of travel agencies in Bangkok, Pattaya, Phuket and Chiang Mai.

Spend the last night in Bangkok so you can take an evening dinner cruise, buy some last minute souvenirs and have an easy ride back to the airport. Choose a hotel near the Skytrain in Bangkok. By the way, even Bangkok and Chiang Mai is warm and sunny enough to give you a bit of a tan.

Good luck. Reply to this

Jeremy,
Congratulations on your up and coming marriage.
My wife and I were in Thailand last year and only had 2 weeks as well. We opted to spend the first day in BKK and then we public bused it out to Kanchanaburi for a few days to check out the infamous Tiger Temple and the bridge over the river Kwai. We came back and caught a flight down to Krabi (loved this town) where we visited Ao Nang (Rai Leh beach) and Koh Phi Phi. We then bused it across to Surat Thani and took the ferry to Koh Samui (visited Koh Tao and Phangyan) where we stayed for a few more days before flying back to BKK. We took 2 days in BKK for sightseeing and shopping at MBK and flew home.

It was very busy but we got to see and ride elephants, see and play with monkeys, see tigers up close, get in some war history, see some amazing Wats, drink, laugh and have a good enough time that we're going back in February to do the north and Camodia!

2 weeks is not a lot of time but if you don't mind traveling fast, you can get a lot in. And if you don't travel fast, pick two spots and do a 5 or 6 days at each and take a couple for BKK. Yes BKK is hot and smelly but you'll be hard pressed to find another city like it anywhere.

Have fun! Reply to this
