Hey folks,
firstly, happy new year to you all. New to this forum, very good resource!

I am heading to Thailand end of Jan for 2 weeks with my other half.
Flying to Bangkok, stay one night, then flying to either Phuket or Krabi, probably the latter, for 10 days travelling around.

Looking for advice for a decent hotel in Bangkok, not too far from airport and easy access into town. Not fussed about price, would rather have a wee bit of luxury on day one and the 2 days before we fly back as treating my lovely lass.

Also, I am taking it that flying to Phuket/Krabi, we can then wing it for digs when we get there? On most of my travels round the world I have done this with no probs but thought I'd ask the Thai experts.

Any other useful Thai related advice greatly appreciated, thanks in advance.
Shanti

Suvarnabhumi Airport is a fair way from areas that you'd probably want to visit so you'd be better off to stay in the Silom area or Sukhumvit. Not really sure about hotels in the airport area but there would be a couple. Transport would be a problem. It's either taxis or the BTSif the line is completed which I very much doubt. If you decide on the Sukhumvit area try The Honey hotel.Soi19. Reply to this

"we can then wing it for digs" - In english please?

You don't need to pre-book the flight to Krabi nor Phuket. There are several domestic flights and you can catch any of them. You might need to wait a couple of hours if they are full, but there is a nice thai-massage place where you can relax.

happy traveling

It doesn't sound like luxury but I would highly recommend the YHA Baan Dinso. It's in a great location in the city, really near to loads of the places you'd probably want to see and really lovely for not that much money, TV in room, big duvets, aircon, great breakfast.... Reply to this

For Bangkok it is helpful to have a hotel that is close to the Skytrain (overhead rail servce.)

Here are two you can look at; since you are not worried about price why not book the first night so you have a place to go to!

Pathumwan Princess:

Asia Hotel:
http://www.asiahotel.co.th/asia_bangkok.htm

Hotels with air, hot water, private toilet/bath, TV and maid service start around 600 baht, a place around 1200-1400 baht is not too bad if you want to save a little money.

It is one thing to arrive in the morning or even early afternoon and go looking for hotels, but if you arrive late at night it is nice to have an address to give the taxi driver.

Why not split your trip between "mostly beach type stuff around Phuket" and some of the places up north that make Thailand more unique. Check out Chiang Mai too!

Good luck.
