meeting travellers in Thailand?

IMO, it seems harder to meet travellers in Thailand than in other Western countries. The whole travel social thing happens in hostels in the West but in Thailand and Asia mostly all accommodation is in guesthouses, which often do not have the same feel nor a central lounge area> Any thoughts?
The only other things I've met people on are organised tours, which you don't do every day. Reply to this

Sit at any cafe, bar or eatery and you will meet travelers. Many guesthouses have restaurants. We have met many people while sitting and eating. We haven't had any difficulties meeting people anywhere in SE Asia to include Thailand. Reply to this

I dunno, it just seems like to me it's the hardest place that I've been to so far.
People do not feel at ease sitting in restaurants as they do on the sofa in a hostel. Most will think you're just weird to approach them in a cafe 😊
...and sitting at a bar means sitting by yourself...

J Webster,
Have you been to the same Thailand as me? Although you are right about the guesthouses and the central lounge thing, I have to agree w/ #2, take the time to sit in any restaurant or bar and when you hear someone talk about some tour they are going on or where they have been, tell them you couldn't help but over hear "blah, blah, blah" and that's your in.
I have met few travelers that didn't like to talk about their trip. Or just ask people about the area and if they know what there is to around there. Once again, if you're trying to meet people, you have to have something in common to talk about.

Tours are another great way to get to meet people.

YMMV
