SW China travel

My wife & I are planning to travel Vietnam for a few weeks starting in mid-March. We're then going to spend a month in SW China. Suggestions on how to travel between our China cities & things to add to or subtract from our plans would be appreciated.

My wife & I are planning to travel Vietnam for a few weeks starting in mid-March. We're then going to spend a month in SW China. We're comfortable using all means of travel. Here's our current route plans:
Guanxi: enter China at Pingxiang, Nanning, Lizhou, Yangshuo, Guilin, Longsheng, Sanjiang.
Guizhou: Zhaoxing, Kaili, Guiyang, Anshun, Huanguoshu, Xigyi.
Yunnan: Kunming, Dali, Lijiang, depart China from Beijing.
Suggestions on how to travel between these places & things to add to or subtract from our plans would be appreciated.

Sleeper buses and sleeper trains are really good in China. Tickets are available at the station but it's a good idea to get someone who works at your hotel to write down what tickets you want in Chinese. It saves a lot of miming at the station. Yangshuo is a beautiful area. Not so sure that you would need to spend time in both Yangshuo and Guilin - my personal preference would be Yangshuo. If you do go there have a look at Yangshuo Culture House (I think) as a place to stay. The guy who runs it, Wei, will do everything in his power to ensure you enjoy your time there and is happy to teach you Tai Chi, cooking and Mahjong. It also included food while we were there which was a real communal affair. Great fun and a cross between a hostel and a homestay.

Have fun. Reply to this

Hi Bob,
Tend to agree with Allee, you might want to cut Guilin (way too many tourists there...) especially if you spend some time in Yangshuo (much nicer)...
For Guiyang/Anshun/ Huanguoshu, feel free to check my blog, might help :-) Was there in May and definitly worth it if you are looking for a true chinese experience!
In Yunnan, you might want to add a short trip in the Xishuangbanna, will be warmer and the area is absolutely amazing! Just like Guizhou, this is less touristic but has a lot to offer!
Enjoy your trip!
Laetitia
