The meter is like any electronic meter in any cab with a LED readout. We kept saying "Chai Meter" (yes meter) to the cab driver who seemed to speak next to no English yet I missed him turning it on. As we drove, it did not start moving. Again I said "Chai Meter" and he kept saying "Chai, Chai". After about 1 minute, the meter started registering.

Easy as pie.

Hi Larry
It is easy to see,if you sit in the front or the back, as the meter is situated on the dashboard. The price is prominately displayed in red and you can watch it ticking over. The price is displayed in normal numbers, not Thai numbers.I have travelled many times in taxis and never had a problem. Is it easy to know if the meter is on and to understand how to read it? can somebody help with that

Yes, it is easy to see. It is like the taxi meters in many countries. You will be able to see it totting up the price as you go.

Most/all taxi drivers in Bangkok are straighforward and honest. Once they switch on the meter, I dont think you will have any problem with them. I never did(have a problem I mean).

Meter starts at 35 baht. Price increases with time and distance.

Make sure you can see the meter face, once from the airport I had a driver with a bunched up shirt over the meter face, meter was set at 50 baht higher. Pointed this price out and he said he had already included the surcharge, no additional money at airport. I wondered how many people hopped in his cab and never checked the meter and paid the an extra 50 baht surcharge at the hotel.

Taxi cabs are cheap in Bangkok when you use the meter! Meter taxi cabs are cheaper than tuk-tuks when in the city!

There is always a cheap Airport Express bus for 150 baht if you arrive during the day up to around 11 PM. Bus takes twice as long as a taxi and gets you close to your hotel but not to the doorstep. Several Airport Express bus routes that take you near to many popular hotels and areas.
