Introduction, my route and a question

Hello, I've been reading this site for a while and there is a lot of interesting stuff on it. I'm currently teaching in China and will be travelling at the end of my contract (the spring festival, yeah, I know).

I plan on going overland from China to Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, fly to HK, then across China for a few months heading west, taking in Tibet en route, crossing into Pakistan and finally into India.

From what i've read these two china-vietnam crossings sound good:
1. pingxiang-dangdang
2. hekou-laocai

It seems as if more people opt for 1, any reason for that. Is it an easier crossing. I'd like to do 2, so I get to see Sapa, then head towards Hanoi.

Advice on both crossings much appreciated Reply to this

The best to go to Vietnam from China is through the city of Nanning (your option 1). Near the main train station you will find a bus terminal that goes directly to Hanoi and the bus takes about 8 hours including immigration procedures. There are buses everyday and the service is very good, in particular in the Chinese side.

There's a direct train from Nanning to Hanoi now apparantly. I read in the Vietnam news that it started running on New Years Day. Reply to this
