I have read some really scary stories about bad tours of Halong Bay ,people not getting the boat they promised , boats with rats, terrible food, people having their passports taken away.Can any travellers recommend reliable companies other than Handspan?

Reply to this Vegan, ET pumkin, Kangaroo, Indochine, Sinh Cafe are all good. Cheap tours underpay their staffs, use lemon boats, etc.. So don't pay a pittance. About $70 and up for 3d/2n trip is reasonable amount to garantee a good trip. Good luck!
Reply to this We used Ocean tours for a 3 day, two night tour. A little bit more expensive than others, but we were TOTALLY delighted with the entire tour. Very impressive. The food on the boat was OUTSTANDING. They even have their own private island w/bungalows. The only drawback is that they only had two functioning kayaks on the island.
