I think that it is great to take the laptop for your travel because you need to upload for any document anytime. For Thai Lan and Viet nam no woory about wireless just afraid of Laos or Combodia but I think most hotels have.

One thing you must keep in mind that if you intend to stay in cheaper places there may be little security for your laptop. You might just have to take it with you all the time. It is not always the hotel staff you have to worry about stealing your stuff you are just as likely to have something stolen by a fellow tourist.
I use a flash drive with Firefox and Opera on it. This FD has all of my favorites plus Notepad and an antivirus program (ClamWin) that is real portable. When I am in an internet shop I just plug that flash drive in and I have the same favorites that I have on my home computer. Best of all, I can keep that FD in my pocket or walk-around bag and not have to worry abut anything being stolen. Get one that is password protected, I use one with U3 by Sandisk.
So, up to you! You might be lucky and not drop your laptop and not have it stolen, lots of people get by with their own computer. But I don't think it is really necessary unless you need it for business or school. Emails no problems in most places with internet shops.
