i have had to drastiacally alter my travel plans as i have not got a visa for vietnam. my original plan was to go from bangkok through laos and vietnam and then straight up to hangzhou to meet my girlfreind and go on from there. Now I plan to go through Laos and make my way to china through there. My question is is there a train from Kunming that runs to Hangzhou and if there is how long does it take and how much does it cost ?????

Have you checked with the Vietnamese Embassy in Bangkok to see whether they can issue you with a visa?

There are at least two trains leaving at different times that travel this route. It takes about 2 days and the cost depends on the seat you choose - anything from around USD50 - USD150. Frankly, it is a long and uncomfortable journey by train - albeit the scenery in parts make up for the discomfort of traveling on a wooden bench! If I were to do it again I would book the first class sleeper and not rough it!!

If you Google "trains from Kunming to Hangzhou" you will get a list of different travel agents who can arrange the booking for you.

Hi Toni,
There are definitely train from Kunming to Shanghai (50+ hours if I recall properly...) and then Hangzhou is at 45 mn by train :-)
You might want to check out chinese airlines too, including the Spring Airline (low cost) http://www.chinaspringtour.com/
Might end up costing you same price as the train!

Cheers
