Hey again,

I've finally finished finalising our itinerary for our 6 or 7 week trip to Sth Asia in May

Wondering what everyone thinks?

All prices are for 2 people and are in $AUD

Dates are pretty approximate of course.....!

17/05/2009 Brisbane - Sydney $200 Virgin Blue
19/05/2009 Sydney - Macau $600 Viva Macau
21/05/2009 Macau - Hong Kong $60 TurboJet (Ferry)
23/05/2009 Hong Kong - Beijing $370 MTR (Train) T98
2/06/2009 Beijing - Hanoi (Vietnam) $380 Vietnam Railways
6/06/2008 Hanoi - Luang Prabang $600 Vietnam Airways
9/06/2008 Luang Prabang - Vientiane $60 Bus
12/06/2008 Vientiane - Bangkok $100 Thai Rail
16/06/2008 Bangkok - Phuket $120 Air Asia
20/06/2008 Phuket - Singapore $140 Air Asia
22-Jun Singapore - Bangalore $260 Tiger
3-Jul Bangalore - Singapore $300 Tiger
4-Jul Singapore - Kuala Lumpar $30 Train
6-Jul Kuala Lumpar - Gold Coast $620 Air Asia

We've booked our flight from Sydney - Macau already, when should we book everything else??? I worry about leaving it too long and the prices rising... but if I book everything now then if we run late or have delays on trains etc... then we lose the ticket. Hmm. What do frequent travellers do? Reply to this

That seems like a lot of money to be spending on flights, especially the hanoi-LP.

You might get a cheaper far KL to Trichy, India with air asia then flying to bangalore (and i heard bangalore isnt very nice)

There are a lot of random sales on air asia, so if you keep checking their site you may score some steals. Id say the flights you are looking at now are high enough that you would be better off waiting for a lot of them. Reply to this

Oh yeah, KL to Trichy is about $60 cheaper
and on the way back its even better.. $100 cheaper..!
we will be going to Bangalore though, but at least if we use Air Asia for one of the legs, it'll cut costs, and save us from having to go back to bangalore again... which is great! thanks for the tip.

The prices seem OK to me, remember these prices are $AUD including taxes & including fares for 2 people

The only air fare that I think is steep is Hanoi to Luang Prabang... I know about the other way, going rail & bus, but that will take a long time... and only $150 less... so we might have to give Laos a miss altogether if we can't afford it (skipping Laos will save us about $800 which is a huge chunk of our budget)

anyway so you think it is safe to hold off from booking anything? i couldnt find anywhere on air asias site when their sales end

**totally missed that part mate.

Im not sure if you should wait, I went ahead and booked all my flights because I didnt want to be worried about it while traveling, but I see a lot of negatives with my decision.

I think because you want to see so much in 6 weeks, maybe you should book ahead, but maybe wait and keep checking the sales between now and when you go, because I dont see them rising too much.

Airasia seems to put new sales up every (2--4) weeks.

Your trip looks great!

i've been travelling in asia for 8 months now and i would not recommend to book anything at all (except maybe your flight back home if that makes you feel safe). Doing it that way allows you to stay where you like and to take things as they come. Usually, when we fly we book a few days in advance and it has never been a problem. Also, when on the go you'll discover many ways to travel cheaper locally. Just a thought of course... ;-) Reply to this
