I am going from Vietnam to Cambodia and then to thailand - I need to figure out how to get from one country to the next! and a few other pressing questions...

Okie Dokie!
I am landing in Ho Chi Minh and am traveling up the coast to Hanoi where I will be leaving to Cambodia (Phnom Penh) - I have heard I can catch a boat along the Mekong River into Cambodia - now, where do I book this from? where do I get the boat from? how much does it cost?
also - if I were to fly - would that be easier/cheaper and how do I arrange that?? - I emailed Vietnam airlines and they said I must do it through a travel agent, but the ones I have spoken to don't do it!
I am at the end of my rope with this - it is the only thing on my list I have left to do and it seems an unanswerable question to all I ask.

I've seen some of the photos of people who went along the Mekong River and it looks awesome, and I would love love love to do that!!!

Please help me - this is my first time traveling and I want to make sure I am properly prepared.

other questions are:
- I have planned to take $3000 with me, is that enough for 6-7 weeks all up?
- Should I take malaria tablets for Cambodia?
- What is the one piece of advice you would give a 20 year old girl traveling to SE Asia - I'm a smart, careful person but is there anything I should know?

THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!
:D - Samantha.

Dear Samantha,

Thank for your post, you can travel to Cambodia from Saigon by bus or boat from Mekong Delta

Bus at Sapaco price 18 usd (depart from Pham Ngu Lao St, HCMC)
Boat at Hang Chau II price at 24 usd/pax depart from Chau Doc at 8:00. Visa at border at 22 usd

If you need cheap flight you can book jetstar.com to Cambodia, but now stop to Phnompenh, just Siemreap only
Howere, you can use Vietnam Airline

3000 Usd be ok, but you had better bring your credit card. Malaria tablets for Cambodia will need

I hope above info are helpful. Good luck

1. Hanoi is in North Vietnam, a long way from Cambodia. You'll have to get back to Ho Chi Minh t get a bus and boat to Cambodia. Or you can simply fly there.

2. There are heaps of travel agents selling this trip in Ho Chi Minh (Saigon). Pick one! My itinerary was the same as everyone elses and had all the same headaches, but was with a great crowd, so really enjoyed the trip.

3. $500 a week is heaps - even if you do a dive course in Nha Trang.

4. Malaria tablets are optional. Covering up and using repellent at dawn an dusk is the best protection. You can buy doxycycline over the counter in Cambodia if you want as well.

5. Advice? Hook up with another like-minded traveler as often as possible -- shared experiences are the best. Reply to this

Hi Sam,

If you land in Hanoi it'll be better because Cambodia is next to South of VN. Or you can do Cambodia trip via Mekong Delta first. The price is about $30 to $50 depending on 2d/1n or 3d2n trip. If you have to re-enter VN you must have multiple entry visa for VN.

$3000 is above-average budget. You can pamper yourself every day.

On your travel route you will meet a lot of travelers about your age, then maybe do something together, and exchange useful informations.

Smart and careful. Thta's good! sometimes you also need to be patient. And friendly and open-minded all the time, that'd help!

I agree with Pkeusgen.

Enjoy your trip!

Thank you all for your info!
I know that the easiest way of getting to Cambodia is through HCMC, but we've already purchased the ticket there, so what we'll have to do is travel up towards the north, and then go back down to HCMC to catch the Mekong Delta River boat trip, which I don't have too much of an issue with, besides the time wastage, I've extended the trip, I'm now returning from SE Asia on the 20th Jan, so I should have plenty of time.

I am so excited!!!

One more thing. If you like clothes, I suggest you drop your budget to $2,400 and save $600 for a Hoi An shopping extravaganza. Reply to this
