Travel in Asia

Advice on when to travel to places and places of specific interest.
15 years ago, October 1st 2008 No: 1 Msg: #50458
I have travelled before with my family at the age of 15 and it hooked me. I began to realise that I had not taken full advantage of my opportunity soon after returning to England to undertake my A-levels.
Ever since returning to school I have known I had the desire to travel once again, certainly before returning to University. I finished my A-levels this July and got the results I needed for my place in Uni.
I deferred a year, as I always knew I would and started to contemplate the idea of where I would like to travel. I read a book when on holiday in France with school friends on the art of vagabonding, by Ralf Potts. Needless to say this book inspired me to think more seriously about the way I wished to travel, and where.
I finally settled on Asia, partly because I never got the chance on my last adventure, as the journey was cut short, but also because Africa seems a little too dangerous for an inexperienced traveller.
Anyway, on to my question. I am currently seeking employment so I can earn the money I need to travel, instead of merely getting a loan from my parents, and so this has delayed my departure. But what I really want is advice on the best times to visit countries in Asia and which would be the best order to go about visiting them.
So far I have settled on India, China, Mongolia, Thailand, Singapore, Brunei and possibly Japan, depending on the state of my finances. I would just like any advice on which order in which to visit these countries, what time of the year I should think about visiting them and if there are any other areas I should visit or specifically avoid.
I plan to leave March or April time and I hope to have upward of £2000. I plan to travel for 4-5 months, but I am fairly green in the art of journey planning so this may be shortened or lengthened depending on circumstances such as money and other demands.

Grateful for any response to my enquiry, especially as you have had to wade through all this, and my query is fairly broad.

I would recommend that you include Cambodia on your journeying. The cost of living suits a budget traveller and it is not saturated by tourism unlike some parts of Thailand. There are beautiful beaches on the coast (Sihanouk Ville is where I went) and even someone without a driving license can hire a moto (motorbike/scooter hybird) and experience the thrill of zooming down the open road (although beware the cows that will saunter into the middle of the road unphased by the potential death machine).
Most people go to Phnom Penh, the capital, and although it is sombering, whilst there it is advisable to go to the Killing Fields and the genocide museum.
The final place I went is Siem Reap, which is the most famous part of Cambodia because it contains Angkor Wat, a bigarse temple that also claim the no.2 spot on the 7 wonders of the world list.
If you're interested I can recommend some good places to stay as well.

Ahh, no it is not a question of choosing a single country, although it may end up I stay in a country longer than I anticipated because I fall in love with it. I am more after suggestions on where I could visit and knowledge on the climate etc. around the time of my depature.

India is where I intend to fly to originally though, having become intrigued by its culture through certain books.

In respone to Sophie, I don't know why I left Cambodia out, as I have a desire to visit it after reading about the Angkor Wat and about the mass genocide in a travellers book, possibly one of Pico Iyer's, but I am not too sure. Reply to this

The countries you have picked are all north of the equater so you need to look at the monsoon charts and move with them SE Asia Thailand Cambodia Vietnam best dec to April further north want to be in the summer months for China Japan all though going on the fringes of the seasons is when you can negotiate the best for the hotels and guesthouses.

Bali is south of the equater and very cheap and beautiful check it out before you lock anything in. oppisite monsoon from S E Asia. Reply to this
