I'll be heading to Vietnam soon for a month and of course will do a tour of halong Bay while there. It would be interesting to hear your comments on companies you used and what you got for your money etc.
Reply to this Take tour to Halong bay from Hanoi, you have many option: one day tour with phoenix Junk (daily junk) - sharing junk, seat in coach tour. 2 days 1 night in Halong Bay with overnight on boat (package tour included simple breakfast on boat and seafood lunch, dinner) or overnight at Hotel in Halong. Travel agent will give you more benefit.

Reply to this You will see a lot of travel agencies at the Old Quarter in Hanoi. You should choose 3d/2n option with one night on the junk and the other one on Cat Ba island. My advice is don't pay a pittance for Halong bay trip if you really want to have a good time, nice boat, clean and comfortable room, tasty seafood meals, friendly and helpful boat crew, pleasant travel fellowers, and nice cruise on the bay. The price should be around $70-$90 (mid-range) or above. If you pay less the chance is you could have an opposite experience, plus seeing some rats.

There are 2class tour to Halong bay: Budget tour and luxury tour.
Budget tour, you join tour with others customers(about 12people), you can come to any Sinh Cafe in old quarter of Hanoi to buy a trip.
Or Luxury tour to Halong bay with deluxe Junk as Emeraude cruise, Indochina sails, Huong Hai junk, .....and the price is more expensive.
2days/1night trip to Halong bay is ok, you can sleep on the boat.

Reply to this We booked a two night trip through hanoi backpackers in Hanoi. the trip included one night on the boat and another on cat ba island. I'm not sure what you are looking for in a trip to halong bay, but we did kayaking, rock climbing and ciff jumping with all young people our age which made it nice. there were late nights drinking, but it all depends on what you are looking for. if you are looking for a fun trip with young people i would recommend it.
