Japan Costs?

Cost of travelling around Japan
15 years ago, August 22nd 2008 No: 1 Msg: #46377
I am planning at the moment how much money I need to take with me when travelling. I have done research into most countries but I am stuck on Japan.

What do you think is the average daily spend when in Japan? This would include accomodation, food, travel and sight seeing.

Thanks. Reply to this

Depends what kind of accommodation you're looking for. I was there in 2007 - it was actually cheaper than I was expecting though obviously very pricey compared to the rest of Asia. As I recall I paid around 12quid a night for hostel accommodation (so not that bad); you can mainly get private rooms too in hostels, obviously for a bit more; you can get breakfast and lunch for around 5quid each if you want to eat cheap (they often do these 'lunch sets' where you get two courses for a set price). Mmm, travel and sightseeing - it's so difficult to remember.
I would guess allow 50quid a day for accommodation, food, sightseeing and local travel. Get a Japan Rail Pass (you have to get it before getting to Japan) which will allow you train travel, including Shinkansen, across Japan, and is much cheaper than getting single fares.

Also - just in case you don't know this info - a lot of cash machines don't take international cards in Japan. Go to ATMs in post offices and at the Citibank, all of these take international cards. And some restaurants/accommodation/places of interest also will not accept foreign cards. Cash is best in Japan. Reply to this

Hello.
it highly depends on tastes and travel style, but one this is clear is due to current strong Euro to do anything in Japan seems to be very inexpensive.
There there are some entries by different kind of travelers, you can read through and maybe get an idea for your travel style.

Japan has all the fast food places that blight America. The best place to eat in Japan are restaurants where by you pick and pay for your food in a vending machine. Put in the money and out comes a little ticket. You take the ticket over to the counter and hand it to the person behind the counter. She/he will take half the ticket and leave you with half. They will then go off and get your food. It is fast food Japanese style, really healthy and filling. A meal can be around 400 yen.

They also love cake in Japan. Cream sponge cakes and small fruit tarts. They are to die for. Accommodation can be as cheap or as expensive as you like. Do some research as you won't want to be too far away from the main attractions. Also ensure you get your Japan Rail Pass. They are worth their weight in gold. This will allow you to travel on local trains around cities and to get the ferry to Miyajima Island.

With the site seeing do it yourself. We used the DK eyewitness travel book and just walked around. If you take a card to use in the ATM be warned that only some cash machines take foreign cards. We found out the hard way.

Learn a bit of Japanese it helps.

Keep an eye out for the 100 yen stores - most of them also have food, so can be good for stocking up on snacks, noodles etc.

Definitely get a Japan Rail Pass - there are regional ones as well as the one which covers the whole country.
There's also various day passes within different areas, so plan to do the bulk of distance travelling within the validity of the JR Rail Pass, rather than waste a day of it on local travel.

Have you decided on where you're going etc yet?

Hmm.... Japan is pretty expensive to stay...
Personally for me... Prolly cos my currency is not very strong.
Well anyway, I went there in June & easily spent US$600 with nothing much to bring back seriously...
And I only spent 5 days there...lol!
If you are interested to know about my Japan trip, what I spent on, where I went to, etc..,
