My Lonely Planet book does not list any direct busses or trains to Varanasi. I think you might have to go someplace else first and catch a connecting bus or train. Reply to this

well I got off a bus in a place called Cellu and was surrounded by village idiots laughing and pointing at me and my mate...tried to get a rickshaw and they all ganged up on us with extortionate prices....they followed us everywhere even to get a cup of tea, about 40 of them..men and boys of all ages...thankfully the cops showed up and they stopped being as scary....Lesson to be learnt not to pull up in these places at night....gotta get out of this place hahaha!!! Those guys sound intimidating. What creeps! At least the police were sympathetic. They arent always so sympathetic in some countries about men bothering foreign women but maybe India is determined to take care of their tourist industry. Are you travelling with a woman or a man? Would the police by any chance go to the bus station and wait with you. Sometimes in towns where there are not many tourists they do things like that. Maybe your hotel already knows about them bothering tourists and will chase them away if they appear there.

Cool about the bus. I think there are new bus routes comming along all the time. It was the same with the Thailand Lonely Planet. There were bus routes available that werent listed in it. Journeys turned out to be a lot less complicated than I thought they would be. Reply to this
