Kyoto's a lovely city - these are some of the sights I'd recommend:

The Philospohers trail - if you take the bus 100 from Kyoto station it will drop you at the start of this trail which passes through several beautiful temples, and has a nice canal walk in between - allow a whole day as there is loads to see.

The Golden Temple;

One place I didn't go was (and I can't remember the name exactly) : you pass through a thousand red/orange pagoda type-things (not too helpful, sorry!) anyway, it's supposed to be good!

The castle in Kyoto is also good;

The Gyon area of Kyoto is worth a visit - there are lots of narrow streets full of old wooden houses, great architecture. It's also the place for spotting geishas if you're into that (I wasn't)

An hour and a half on the train from Kyoto will take you to Nara - it's easily see-able as a day trip and has the AMAZING Todaiji temple (with the Giant Buddha) which I think is un-missable;

hope that's helpful - you're sure to have a good time! and there's great sushi and sashimi available in most cafes around Kyoto... Reply to this
