Hey,

Can anyone please help, me and my boyfriend are visiting Thailand in December 2008 - January 2009.

Where is the Best place to be over New Years? Phuket, Phi-Phi? And what beach, hotel?
I've searched so many of the hotels and resorts already, but everything I like is VERY expensive! I want to stay on the beach!

And if we travel between Bangkok and the Islands,(29th/30th December) is it better to book our bus/boat tickets in advance through "Traveller2000"??

I'm not sure of anything in Thailand. Our flight tickets is already booked, and our first and last nights in Bangkok. And we are also going to the Kanchanaburi Province to visit the Tiger temple etc.

Any tips, hotels or anything.
Thanks so much!

Hello Mandi 😊

Thailand can be very inexpensive or expensive to travel in. The choice is yours really.

No need to book a bus and boat through anybody online. There are generally plenty of agents ready to sell you what you need at a good price when you get there. For example, I got from Bangkok to Koh Samui for around 15 Euros altogether. I do suggest you get to the island you want to spend New Years Eve on around a week before NYE. If you leave it until the day before or a couple of days before then you will find it difficult to find accomodation.

I am unsure about what exactly type of accomodation you are looking for so it might be an idea to get a copy of the Lonely Planet book for Thailand. It will give information on things like accomodation for every budget, transport, safety, health....... It is available in most bookshops around the world for around 30 Euros.

When you get to Bangkok go to Kho San Road area (I'm staying on Soi Rambutree which is 5 mins walk from there and great fun) go in a taxi and see who has rooms, no need to book in advance unless you get in very late at night, there's a million and 1 places here for all budgets. You'll find loads of travel agents on the main streets who will help you with all your bookings for transport, excursions etc and answer all your queries ...usually you can book and travel on the same day, but for New Years I have no idea... I would book it in advance just to keep my mind at rest. Don't think you'd need to do that til the beginning of December though...I'd call a Bangkok tourist information and do it through them...you're so organised sorting this out now. Good luck x Reply to this

Be a bit careful about buying bus and boat combos to the islands from the agents on the Khao San Road unless somebody has tried one and can recommend. The busses going from the bus station have fewer robberies at night and it will be easy to catch a boat once you get to the town they leave from.. Also those bus boat combos may also ask you to pay more along the why when it is too late to back out. You might discover things like your boat reservation is missing and you have to pay again. Also beware of taxi drivers in Surat Thani(where a lot of the boats go from). There are travel agents near both the bus and train stations. Go straight to them to buy your boat ticket. Reply to this

Hi Mandi,
I and my girlfriend are heading to Thailand in Dec also - 28th until 18th Jan. We're staying in the Como Resort, Koh Samui for the first 7 days and going with the flow after that. We were thinking of going to the New Years eve full moon party, but we have now decided against it. We're currently researching other weird and wonderful things to do for New Years eve so I would be grateful if you could pass on any information that you get.

Thanks in Advance.

Hey you guys, thanks so much for all the info. I've decided to book at Tupkaek sunset Beach resort for new Years.. I hope it is nice there!!

Michael, I also thought about the Full Moon Party, but also decided against it. More into the relaxing - special New Years this Year. Most of the Resorts/Hotels I've emailed, has a GALA DINNER> some places sounds really nice. They have dances, fireworks, and like nice stuff for their guests. But ask them, before you book, because for instance, my boyfriend is DEADLY allergic for ANY fish, and some of the Gala Dinners, just serve fish, and then we cant stay there. And I think some doesn't even care alot about New Years? Dont know...

Let me know if you find anything nice! All the places I love is so expensive. You guys are lucky, with $ and Euros you can stay at nice places, South Africa Rand is not that much different from Thai BAHT!

Chat soon.
