Hello Felix 😊

If you head straight to the Khao San road you will find plenty of guesthouse rooms. Prices are from 2 Euros per night up. There is also at least one hostel there.
If the Khao San Road is not quiet enough for you then the surrounding streets which are a bit quiter have guesthouses too. One to try would be walk on the Khao San Road in the direction towards the river. When you get to the perpendicular street at the end of the Khao San road cross it and turn right. Then take the next left. Along that street are a few guesthouses. If you walk to the end of that street and then turn left there is another street with lots of guesthouses.

The above is not as much of a walk as the description makes it seem. The streets are all short.

What does dirt cheap mean to you? You can sleep on a sidewalk for free but that kind of sucks! In Thailand you can find air conditioned rooms with private toilets and hot water, TV too - starting from around 400 to 700 baht depending on where you are. Pattaya and smaller cities are cheaper than Phuket and Bangkok.

Personally I prefer a private room for safety. Use the security box for your spare money and valuables if the hotel/hostel has one. If something comes up missing from your room it could be a fellow tourist that ripped you off! Usually the cheaper the place the less you get in security! Too late for you now, but you should have bags that can lock as well as extra padlocks.

Good luck.
