Diving in Thailand

Diver's advice needed!
15 years ago, June 25th 2008 No: 1 Msg: #39882
I was browsing for diving schools in Ko Tao and other Thai islands to take a PADI course during my holidays there and the following questions came to mind:

Do I need to prepare any type of medical form before going so that I can enroll?
I had a pneumothorax a few years ago, is this a problem?
If I could attend classes every day, how many days would it take to finish the course?

Thanx! Reply to this

For you pneumothorax, ask a doctor.
Padi open water is done in 3 to 4 days max.
You will not need any medical proof to dive in Thailand...just need to sign disclaimer forms...at the end, diving is our own risk...that's why ask a doctor for your condition prior.

Hope you can do it, nothing better in life...few dive entries on my blog...

Couple of suggestions:
1) If you are limited on time you may wish to do a "referral course". This means you take the theory in your home country and just do the 4 open water dives in Thailand. - Might cost you a little more - but then you won't have to waste time on vacation doing the theory - and you can research the quality of the dive centres at home.

2) PADI requires that all students sign a disclaimer - if you check "yes" to any of the conditions they list you are supposed to provide a written certificate from a doctor in order to continue the course. Ofcourse many dive centres ignore this - but it is for your own safety and so I would check with a doctor first.

Beware - diving is an addiction 😊 Reply to this
