Need advice on cheap air ticketys, and how to make bus and overnight train bookings
15 years ago, June 23rd 2008 No: 1 Msg: #39615
I will be travelling with my husband and another couple in August 2008. We booked our tickets and accomodation from a local travel agency in South Africa in March 2008 and I was advised that it is best to book flights from Thailand to Kuala Lampur when I am there. I have just checked the website, Air Asia, and the ticket prices have almost doubled since I checked in May.

We planning on taking the overnight train from Bangkok to Surat Thani and a return ferry to Kho Pha Ngan, then a bus to Phuket, then a flight to Kuala Lampur and a train to Singapore.

All those internal travel arrangements have not been made yet.

Any advise would be greatly appreciated!!!

Thanx,

Hello Tania 😊

For getting from Bangkok to Surat Thani I suggest you take the bus rather than the train, unless you particularly like trains. Many of the trains fill up so they need to be booked a few days in advance. Rumour has it that you can make these bookings by phone but I have been told by somebody who tried that those who answer the phone dont usually speak a level of English that makes booking possible. You would need to go to the train station a few days in advance and book in person. Also the trains dont always arrive at the destinations at the times that they are supposed to, which makes getting some propper sleep difficult.

A lot of busses go from Bangkok to Surat Thani so you would not need to prebook. Just go to the Southern bus station on the afternoon and buy a ticket for a bus going to Surat Thani that evening. When you get out of the bus in Surat Thani ignore taxi drivers. Whatever they tell you is likely not true. Just go straight to the ticket office and buy a ticket to Koh Pha Ngan. The agent will usually also provide transport to the pier included in the boat ticket. Dont buy bus and boat combo tickets from agents in Bangkok. They are not as reliable as the busses which go from the bus station.

To get to Phuket from Surat Thani take the bus that runs bettween Phukett town and Surat Thani. You can catch it at either the bus station or opposite the train station in Surat Thani. They go frequently.

For the flight try buying a ticket from an agent in Bangkok.

For information about flights you could also ask opospa .
He lives in Malaysia and often flies between Malaysia and Thailand.

Helo0o0o0 Tania;

Well My self i used the train from Bangkok to Hatyai on my way back from Thailand to Malaysia .. Well the Train will take more hours then the bus .. but in my opinion I think the train is more comfortable as you can get a bed and sleep (You should ask the counter in the train station for that). I made my booking once i reached the train station and i got the next train without any problems.
