Dear all, do any of you have any suggestions on the above?

I am keen to see or do some volunteer work with the orangutans but don't know the best/easiest way. Also is it best to visit the main sanctuary in Borneo or can a similar experience be had in Medan, Sumatra?

All comments welcome! Reply to this

Hi GWK1,

In Malaysia Sabah we have "Sepilok Orang Utan Sanctuary" in Sandakan Sabah, it is in the Borneo Island.

Here you go: http://www.sabahtourism.com/en/destination/32-sepilok-orang-utan-sanctuary/ Reply to this

There are probably other places to see these amazing creatures and I'm not sure about volunteering nut I can highly recommend "Uncle Tan's Jungle Camp" in Sabah. It is on the Kinabanatang (sp?) river in the middle of secondary growth rainforest and next to an ox-bow lake. Not only have you an excellent chance of seeing wild Urang's but a whole host of other creatures too (Proboscis, Gibbon's, silver leaf monkey's, huge moniter lizard's, endless bird life, all manner of huge creepy crawlies and of course come-come the bearded pig!). Hope this helps Reply to this

I've seen orangs in Borneo and Sumatra...

In order to see wild orangutans in a spectacular setting, I would go to Gunung Leuser National Park in Sumatra. However, instead of visiting Bukit Lawang like everyone else, head towards Ketambe. There are many orangs there that hang out in the canopy within a days walk of the village. The old growth forests there are amazing. The upper canopy is so thick that there is not much undergrowth -- which makes for favorable viewing of orangs, various hornbills, etc... If you have an adventurous streak, you could easily set up a serious expedition that would take you to places that rarely are seen by humans.
