Thailand Dangerous?

Being a solo, female traveler, I heard I'm going to get stabbed.

As ridiculous as that might sound to some people, that is exactly what I heard yesterday. One of my friends visited Bangkok for several days and told me that it was very dangerous for me to go by myself. He told me just looking at a person wrong will wind up getting me stabbed.

I'm a petite girl, but I have my wits and common sense in check, and I actually was under the impression that Thailand was safe for women travelers. I've read some people's blogs about going there and they seemed to not have to worry.

Any tips or suggestions are much appreciated.

Hello Dana 😊

I dont think Bangkok is even nearly as dangerous as your friend says. In fact Thailand is a heavenly place for women travelers in many ways. In fact, it is the only country I have ever been in where I experienced no sexual harassment at all. Having said that, dont throw caution to the wind. Avoid wandering around drunk and stay away from the drugs scene. Also avoid accepting food and drinks from strangers. Druggings are rare but not unheard of in Thailand.

Thanks Mel. Yah, he hung out in and around the red light districts some of the time, and I have no desire to see those places. Reply to this

Last December around 1,240,000 visitors came to Thailand and I imagine most of them went home unmolested! You do get the occasional drunk who gets in trouble - but for the most part Bangkok is probably safer than your own capital city!

Is there crime - yes! Most of the problems tourists have is paying too much for their cab rides or getting swindled buying jewelry that they have no expertise in! Tourism is very important to the Thai economy and the police try to keep a handle on crime! The police know that bad news about crime keeps the tourists away! I would say that Bangkok is safer than Boston, New York City and London!

Your friend was giving you wrong info! Is your friend a little funny anyway?

I have met women in their 50's traveling alone! I even remember one old bird around 85 having a merry old time!

If you get drunk a lot and take "risky chances" with guys you just met you might get into trouble! But if you take normal precautions you should be okay. If you intend to hang around with dopers you might get in trouble! too!

Don't wear expensive gold necklaces, don't flash a lot of money, don't over tip (that shows you are careless with your money,) keep in contact with your family and friends via email. Notify your hotel who you will be on tour with, what tour company and when you should be coming back.

There are probably countries on your list that you will be visiting that are definitely more dangerous than Thailand!

LOL I think all of Thailand could be considered the Red Light District. The sex industry there is very busy. But it is still generally safe for women to travel alone in Thailand. Reply to this
